Engineer I, Senior / Structural Engineer

This is a position intended to build a pool of qualified candidates for a potential future opening within our company

The Engineer, Senior I performs engineering design review and analysis assignments involving a significant project or several smaller, less complex projects. These assignments require the fully competent application of engineering principles in naval architecture and ship structural engineering. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, the incumbent will develop a thorough understanding of ABS policies, methods, and procedures. This role is focused on the structural design review and assessment of vessel hull structures. .

What You Will Do:

- With minimal or no supervision, perform detailed engineering reviews of ship hull structural plans for compliance with applicable ABS Rules, statutory regulations, and contract commitments.
- Perform structural assessments and analyses as required, including the application and review of finite element analysis methods for vessel structures.
- Ensure the delivery of high-quality technical service and maintain strong customer relationships.
- Apply broad and diversified knowledge of structural engineering principles and practices to engineering reviews and analyses.
- Develop practical solutions to technical issues and recommend improvements to methods, procedures, or structural designs where needed.
- Review the work of other engineers and provide technical guidance and training when required.
- Participate in the development and revision of Rules related to marine and vessel structure and advise team members on Rule application and interpretation.
- Prepare technically accurate and timely written responses to clients in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintain liaison with other engineering specialists internally and externally.
- Prepare accurate billing to clients.
- Work collaboratively within the team while performing assignments independently for most of the time.
- Communicate workload status to the appropriate team members to ensure client needs and project commitments are met.
- Implement and maintain ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems requirements within the assigned area of responsibility.

Education and Experience

- B.S. degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Structural Engineering, or another related discipline. An M.S. degree is preferred.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design or consulting office, or classification society, or shipping/oil company.
- Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software.
- Practical experience with the finite element method applied to vessel structures.
- Solid knowledge of classification society Rules, including ABS Rules or equivalent, and their application to vessel hull structures.
- Proven experience in vessel structural design, scantling development, structural calculation, and/or classification plan review.
- Good command of English, with the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Advanced practical industry experience and knowledge of related technical disciplines.
- Demonstrated ability to apply classification and quality concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Ability to identify, analyze, and propose solutions to complex structural engineering problems.
- Ability to work effectively with others while managing assignments autonomously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems.

It Would Be Nice If You Had

- Professional or chartered engineering license, such as CREA registration or an international equivalent.
- M.S. degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience with direct strength assessment, hull girder strength, buckling, fatigue, or structural details for marine vessels.
- Experience designing or reviewing structural plans for commercial vessels, offshore units, or specialized marine assets.
- Prior experience in a classification society environment.

Reporting Relationships:

Reports to a senior-level engineer or technical manager. This position does not have direct reports.
