Mobile Mechanic – Scrap Metal / Recycling Operations

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Mobile Mechanic to support the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment and vehicles used throughout our scrap metal and recycling operations. This position is responsible for diagnosing mechanical issues, performing preventative maintenance, and completing repairs in the field to keep equipment operating safely and minimize downtime.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience working with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, heavy equipment, and mobile machinery in an industrial, construction, waste, recycling, or similar environment.

Key Responsibilities

- Diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair mobile equipment throughout the scrap yard.

- Repair equipment such as material handlers, excavators, loaders, skid steers, forklifts, yard trucks, and other diesel-powered equipment .

- Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, transmissions, brakes, steering, and related components .

- Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, lubrication, fluid changes, and routine servicing according to maintenance schedules.

- Respond to equipment breakdowns in the yard and perform field repairs to minimize operational downtime.

- Inspect equipment for mechanical or safety concerns and identify repairs before failures occur.

- Replace or repair hoses, pumps, cylinders, belts, bearings, starters, alternators, and other mechanical components.

- Use diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment to identify and correct mechanical problems.

- Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, parts used, and preventative maintenance performed.

- Coordinate with operations and maintenance leadership regarding equipment condition, repair needs, and equipment availability.

- Maintain the mobile service truck, tools, parts, and work areas in a safe and organized condition.

- Follow all company safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and equipment-specific safety requirements.

- Perform additional maintenance duties as needed to support yard operations.

Qualifications

- 3+ years of experience as a diesel mechanic, heavy equipment mechanic, mobile mechanic, or field service technician preferred.

- Experience repairing heavy equipment used in scrap metal, recycling, waste, construction, aggregate, mining, or industrial operations is highly desirable.

- Strong knowledge of diesel engines and hydraulic systems.

- Ability to diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical problems.

- Experience working with equipment such as material handlers, excavators, loaders, forklifts, skid steers, and heavy-duty trucks preferred.

- Ability to read service manuals, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and diagnostic information.

- Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.

- Must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

- Must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and around active heavy equipment.

- Ability to lift 50+ lbs. and perform physically demanding mechanical work.

Preferred Experience

Experience with manufacturers such as Sennebogen, Liebherr, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, John Deere, Case, Bobcat, or similar heavy equipment is a plus.
