As a Principal Technical Consultant, Environmental Compliance (Casual) with ERM based in Toronto, ON , you won’t simply complete tasks—you’ll influence how some of Canada’s most significant energy, mining, chemical, and industrial organizations navigate air quality, permitting, and climate responsibilities. In this strategic role, you’ll apply your technical expertise to guide clients through complex regulatory environments, create robust environmental management solutions, and contribute to national climate and compliance initiatives. You’ll be backed by one of the world’s largest Safe and Sustainable Operations (SSO) practices, collaborating with 300+ experts across North America and drawing from industry‑leading best practices.

This is a casual employment contract , with work offered on an as-needed basis. Assignments and hours will vary depending on business and client demand and are not guaranteed.

What Your Impact Is

In this role, you will:

- Support compliance management initiatives through auditing programs, permitting, and reporting requirements for Ontario‑based projects.
- Develop comprehensive environmental management plans—including spills, waste, annual reporting, and legal registers—for a diverse client base.
- Conduct due diligence assessments to identify and evaluate ESG risks associated with financial transactions.
- Conduct regulatory assessments, permitting evaluations, and both desktop and onsite permitting analyses.
- Support SSO team projects as an Associate Project Manager (APM).
- Collaborate across energy, oil & gas, mining, chemical, manufacturing, and industrial sectors on technically challenging and meaningful environmental projects.

What You'll Bring

Required

- BSc in environmental engineering, environmental science, or a related discipline.
- 6+ years of consulting or industry experience.
- Experience performing due diligence assessments.
- Strong project management skills.
- Knowledge of federal and provincial environmental, health and safety regulatory frameworks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced consulting environment—managing multiple assignments, meeting strict deadlines, and traveling to client sites as needed.
- Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.

Preferred

- 8+ years of consulting or industry experience.
- Bilingual (French/English).

Key Responsibilities

- Perform in-field ESG due diligence assessments, evaluating key ESG risks and presenting findings to clients.
- Interact with local regulators to support the review and issuance of air permits.
- Prepare emissions inventories and NPRI reports; quantify air pollutant emissions and impacts.
- Write air quality, waste, spill, and environmental management and monitoring plans.
- Prepare technical recommendations and complete reporting deliverables.
- Perform multiple tasks within defined scope, schedule, and budget expectations while upholding ERM’s quality standards.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, and ERM colleagues.

For the  Principal Technical Consultant, Environmental Compliance (Casual) position, the anticipated hourly pay is $62.26–$76.15 (CAD) . Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay subject to the sole discretion of ERM and its policies and procedures (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).
