Relief Rig Operator

The Relief Operator fills in for the Rig Operator on a workover rig or swab rig as needed. This position is responsible for safely operating assigned equipment, maintaining crew productivity, supporting safe work practices, and helping ensure customer satisfaction when the Rig Operator is absent due to illness, vacation, or other approved absences.

When not serving as the Rig Operator, the Relief Operator works as part of the rig crew in an assigned operational role, which may include Floor Hand, Derrick Hand, Truck Driver, or other rig duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

In the absence of the Rig Operator, the Relief Operator will perform all duties and responsibilities of the Rig Operator to include:

- Operating the assigned rig and equipment in accordance with the contractual terms and conditions as requested or designated by the customers.

- Maintaining regular contact and communication with customers to resolve concerns, issues, and complaints.

- Ensuring that quality products and services are provided to the customers including maintaining productivity standards for all rig functions, following safety procedures for a safe working environment for all rig employees, and adhering to all applicable governmental regulations for compliance.

- Ensuring efficient maintenance of assigned rig and equipment.

- Establishing and maintaining a positive and safe work environment for the assigned rig crew, including training, and coaching the crew on carrying out their assigned duties on the rig.

- When not substituting for the Rig Operator, the Relief Operator will perform the duties of a Floor Hand or Derrick Hand on a rig every day (See Floor Hand and Derrick Hand job descriptions)

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

- High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.

- Dependable transportation.

- Previous experience at Floor Hand and Derrick Hand positions.

- Must have rig operation experience and be able to demonstrate full competency in rigging up/rigging down and well servicing operations.

- Minimum two or more years experience in rig and well servicing operations.

- Knowledge and experience in oilfield well servicing is required.

- Must possess a valid CDL Class B drivers license at minimum, with acceptable MVR and continued compliance with company motor vehicle requirements.

- Ability to effectively communicate with people within and outside of the company.

- Ability to lead or provide guidance to crew members to work safely and efficiently.

- Multi-tasking and basic problem-solving skills required; organizational skills preferred.

- Must meet all qualifications defined in Motor Vehicle Policy.

- Must successfully complete all required pre-employment and ongoing job-related screenings, including physical exam, physical abilities assessment, lift assessment, audiogram, respiratory clearance, drug and alcohol testing, and any other evaluations required by company policy or applicable state and federal regulations.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.

- Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs. frequently. Individual lifting is limited to 50 lbs.; loads over 50 lbs. require a two-person lift or mechanical assistance.

- Meet the physical posture demands of a 12-hour shift, including approximately 7.4 hours standing, 0.9 hours sitting, and 3.7 hours walking.

- Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, push, pull, and use repetitive hand and arm movements while performing rig and crew support duties.

- Climb ladders, stairs, and rig structures, including heights up to approximately 50 feet, while maintaining three points of contact and following applicable fall-prevention requirements.

- Safely operate and work around workover rigs, swab rigs, vehicles, hand tools, power tools, and related well-servicing equipment.

- Maintain required grip strength of approximately 80–100 lbs., along with manual dexterity, balance, coordination, vision, hearing, and physical stamina to safely perform essential rig operations and communicate in hazardous work areas.

- Wear and properly use required personal protective equipment, including hearing protection, respiratory protection when required, flame-resistant clothing, eye protection, hand protection, foot protection, and fall-protection equipment as applicable.

- Work outdoors in hazardous oil and gas well environments, including exposure to extreme heat and cold, wind, rain, mud, dust, fumes, vibration, uneven terrain, high noise levels, and moving equipment.

- Work 12-hour shifts on a 14/7 rotation schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and travel up to approximately 75% as business needs require.
