Nature and Scope:
Reporting to the Director, Clinic and Specialty Programs, the Senior Manager, Specialty Pharmacy is responsible for the successful operation of our Shoppers Drug Mart Specialty Health Network (SDMSHN) Calgary pharmacy to ensure services are provided to patients in accordance with established corporate procedures and provincial/federal pharmacy regulations. The Senior Manager, Specialty Pharmacy is responsible for overseeing pharmacy to ensure patient centric outcomes, regulatory compliance, change management, fiscal stewardship, staffing and team engagement. This role requires a strong leader with critical thinking skills, ability to problem solve and effectively manage professional relationships with prescribers/clients/customers as well as internal leadership. The Senior Manager, Specialty Pharmacy will be responsible for the operations of the SDMSHN Calgary pharmacy which includes complex high cost medication billing, specialized therapies, sterile compounding, clinic prescribers, and other pharmacy operational activities.
What you will do:
Leadership & People
- Provide overall leadership for the SDMSHN Calgary Pharmacy, building an engaged, high-performing team focused on patient care, operational excellence and business results.
- Set clear performance expectations and ensure the team consistently achieves operational, financial and service objectives.
- Build a positive, inclusive culture that promotes teamwork, accountability, open communication, continuous improvement and employee engagement.
- Assess team capabilities and provide ongoing coaching, development and performance feedback; identify and develop talent to support succession planning.
- Lead staffing and workforce planning, including recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling and workforce utilization to ensure the pharmacy is appropriately resourced.
- Conduct regular team meetings and performance reviews and, in partnership with Human Resources, effectively manage employee relations, compensation reviews and adherence to company policies and procedures.
- Lead teams effectively through organizational and operational change and clearly communicate business priorities, strategy and expectations.
Pharmacy Operations, Quality & Compliance
- Maintain overall accountability for the day-to-day operations of the SDMSHN Calgary Pharmacy, ensuring safe, efficient and patient-focused pharmacy services.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable provincial and federal legislation, regulatory requirements, professional standards and company policies.
- Ensure prescriptions are processed accurately and in accordance with professional, legal and billing requirements while protecting patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Maintain oversight of narcotics and controlled substances, patient records, pharmaceutical storage and security, inventory management, expired products and other regulated pharmacy processes.
- Ensure Required Operating Procedures (ROPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are embedded into daily operations and consistently followed.
- Oversee quality assurance activities, site certification audits, incident and privacy-breach reporting, Adverse Event (AE) and Product Technical Complaint (PTC) reporting, and corrective and preventative actions.
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels while minimizing out-of-stocks, overstocks, expiries and financial loss.
- Manage operational risks, service issues, shipment delays and customer concerns, identifying root causes and implementing preventative actions.
- Ensure the pharmacy maintains appropriate operational, office and medical supplies and that invoices and supporting documentation are accurately processed.
Financial & Business Performance
- Own pharmacy financial and operational performance, including achievement of revenue, profitability, labour and operating expense plans.
- Regularly review P&L performance, with a focus on revenue, gross margin, expenses and overall profitability, and develop corrective action plans where required.
- Manage labour and workforce utilization to maximize productivity and operational efficiency while maintaining service and quality standards.
- Ensure billing accuracy and appropriate processes to minimize third-party payor compliance and audit risk.
- Participate in annual planning and budgeting for labour, materials, equipment and other operational requirements.
- Identify and execute opportunities to improve gross margin, pricing, productivity and overall pharmacy profitability.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators and use performance data to identify opportunities and drive measurable improvement.
Strategy & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and execute pharmacy strategies and initiatives that support SDMSHN priorities and the continued growth of the Calgary specialty pharmacy.
- Identify, recommend and implement opportunities to improve operational efficiency, patient experience, quality and financial performance.
- Lead continuous improvement and change-management initiatives, leveraging pharmacy best practices and standardized methodologies.
- Collaborate with colleagues to design and implement processes for new products, programs and services.
- Support SDMSHN program launches, strategic projects and cross-functional initiatives.
- Serve as a pharmacy subject-matter expert for technology initiatives, system upgrades and implementations, identifying opportunities to use technology to improve pharmacy operations.
Collaboration, Partnerships & Growth
- Partner closely with Calgary Clinic prescribers and staff to ensure seamless execution of the clinic-pharmacy workflow model, supporting efficient coordination of care and a positive patient experience.
- Build strong, collaborative relationships with clinic prescribers and staff to identify and resolve workflow gaps, improve the patient journey and support shared clinic and pharmacy objectives.
- Partner closely with Program Managers and cross-functional colleagues to ensure patient, customer and program expectations are consistently met.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with vendors and external partners supporting pharmacy operations, cleanroom operations and medical equipment.
- Support vendor selection, contract negotiations and ongoing vendor performance management.
- Participate in client and vendor meetings, providing pharmacy expertise and strategic recommendations that align with best practices and organizational priorities.
- Support business development by identifying, evaluating and helping execute new regional programs and growth opportunities.
- Represent Pharmacy on organizational and technology-focused initiatives and foster strong collaboration across SDMSHN.
- Support the Director, Clinic and Specialty Programs in delivering broader business priorities and assume additional responsibilities as required.
What you will need:
- Provincial Pharmacist license in good standing,
- Minimum of five (5) years management experience within operations
- Experience leading diverse teams-minimum three (3) years
- Previous sterile (hazardous and non-hazardous) compounding experience an asset
- Knowledge of USP 797/USP 800/NAPRA Standards an asset
- Excellent interpersonal & leadership skills, including experience building and developing, and motivating high-quality teams
- Strong leadership skills, demonstrated ability to managing others while adhering to organization values and policies
- Comfortable in dealing with ambiguity; ability to manage multiple priorities in a regulated environment.
- Strong relationship building capabilities and capacity to work in a fast paced, multiple project environment
- Experience and/or knowledge of specialty pharmacy or pharmaceutical industry preferred
- Experience with Pharmacy software systems or CRM preferred
- Proficient in MsOffice applications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to work under stress with short lead times and changing customer needs with short turnaround
