Assistant Professor of Theatre

The Young Harris College Department of Theatre invites applications for a full-time tenure tracked Assistant Professor of Theatre for an appointment beginning August 2027. This positions primary responsibilities will be to teach courses in musical theatre and theatre, and direct in the mainstage season. The position is based in the city of Young Harris, which is in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of North Georgia.

The successful candidate must hold a terminal degree in acting or a closely related field and be capable of teaching acting at all levels, as well as related support courses, and directing up to two productions per academic year. The ideal applicant will be a creative collaborator with significant professional experience in musical theatre and a background in higher education. Ability to teach in related areas — including but not limited to movement, voice and diction, song as monologue, audition techniques, and professional readiness — is highly desirable. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning October 1 and continuing through the fall semester; candidates are encouraged to apply promptly.

Theatre Young Harris is a highly successful program offering three degrees: a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre, a B.A. in Theatre Performance, and a B.A. in Theatrical Design and Production. The department maintains between 30–45 majors across these degrees, and also offers a minor in Theatre, a minor in Dance, and a new B.S. in Arts Administration. For more than a decade, most of our students have attained paid jobs, paid internships, or fully-funded graduate school in theatre within 12 months of graduation. As a department, we produce four mainstage productions per year (two musicals and two plays), as well as an additional 4–6 shows in our Second Season and Studio Series.

Young Harris College is proud of its Wesleyan heritage and commitment. The College was founded by a Methodist circuit-rider, and its namesake and sustainer during the institutions formative years was one of the states outstanding Methodist laypeople. For several years, all Presidents of the College were ordained Methodist ministers, with Young Harris later appointing professional educators who were active lay leaders in the Methodist Church to the presidency.

Today, Young Harris is a member of the North American Association of Methodist Schools, Colleges, and Universities (NAAMSCU), a voluntary association of over 100 private schools, colleges, universities, and seminaries in the United States that cooperate to advance the common good of member institutions and to address issues of mutual concern to the church and the academy. Young Harris is also a member of the University Senate of the UMCs General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM), making the institution eligible for funding from UMC agencies.
