Commissioning Engineer, Process Systems

Tesla is looking for a candidate with strong operations and process engineering background to join our growing commissioning team. This role will play a critical part in supporting complex facility startups by bridging process design knowledge with commissioning execution and operational readiness. The ideal candidate brings a well-rounded understanding of design, commissioning, and operations, and is capable of representing the commissioning team at the highest technical level across all project phases. A combined background in both engineering and operations is preferred. This role demands someone who understands not only how systems are designed, but how they are run, maintained, and optimized in real-world conditions. Experience in Hydrogen Production (HYCO), Air Separation Units (ASU), Cryogenic Distillation, Wastewater Treatment, or other complex process environments is highly preferred.

- Participate in model reviews, HAZOP sessions, and design meetings for complex projects, providing operational and process engineering perspective to ensure systems are practical, safe, and startup-ready from the earliest stages of development
- Evaluate process and system designs against operational best practices, identifying potential startup risks, operability gaps, and commissioning challenges before they reach the field
- Develop and execute commissioning plans, startup procedures, pre-commissioning checklists, and system turnover documentation to ensure alignment with operational requirements and project milestones
- Lead field commissioning and startup activities by providing process engineering guidance during system energization, functional testing, leak testing, and performance verification
- Collaborate cross-functionally with construction, engineering, and operations teams to resolve technical conflicts and ensure a seamless transition from construction completion to full operational readiness
- Identify and track commissioning deficiencies, drive resolution of punch list items, and ensure all systems meet design intent and operational standards prior to handover
- Serve as a key technical knowledge resource within the commissioning organization, contributing to the continuous improvement of startup processes and building internal capability as Tesla's infrastructure portfolio continues to scale

- Bachelor’s degree in chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Process Engineering, or equivalent field experience in a technically complex environment
- 7+ years of combined experience across process design, commissioning, and plant operations, with a demonstrated ability to work across all three disciplines
- Strong understanding of process systems including P&IDs, PFDs, process safety documentation, and control philosophies
- Hands-on experience supporting commissioning and startup activities in an industrial, energy, or manufacturing environment
- Proven ability to review and influence system designs from an operational and startup perspective, identifying risks early in the project lifecycle
- Experience participating in or leading HAZOP, model reviews, and design review sessions for complex process systems
- Strong cross-functional communication skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering, construction, and operations teams
