Chief Engineer – Critical Facilities

Truist Data Center | Wilson, NC

JLL is seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to lead engineering operations at the Truist Data Center in Wilson, NC . This leadership role is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of critical facility infrastructure, ensuring maximum uptime and performance of all building systems. The Chief Engineer will oversee a team of operating engineers, contractors, and service providers while maintaining industry-leading standards for safety, compliance, maintenance, and operational excellence.

This position is ideal for a proven data center or critical facilities professional with strong technical expertise in power distribution, UPS systems, backup generation, HVAC, and mission-critical operations.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

- Provide daily leadership, supervision, and direction to the engineering team.
- Plan, assign, and monitor work activities to ensure operational objectives are achieved safely and efficiently.
- Develop team capabilities through mentoring, coaching, and technical training.
- Promote professionalism, accountability, and a strong safety culture.
- Support employee development through training programs, certifications, and ongoing performance management.

Critical Facility Operations

- Ensure continuous operation and reliability of all critical infrastructure systems, including: UPS systems Emergency generators Switchgear and electrical distribution systems PDU and power monitoring systems HVAC and environmental control systems Chilled water systems Plumbing and water systems Fire and life safety systems Building automation and controls systems
- Monitor system performance and respond to operational issues, alarms, and emergencies.
- Diagnose equipment failures and direct corrective actions to restore operations quickly and safely.
- Maintain and support a 100% uptime-focused environment.

Maintenance & Reliability

- Lead the preventive and predictive maintenance program for all facility equipment.
- Schedule maintenance activities to minimize impact on data center operations.
- Review equipment performance trends and implement reliability improvements.
- Manage spare parts inventory, maintenance tools, and critical equipment stock.
- Coordinate repair activities and replacement projects as required.

Contractor & Vendor Management

- Oversee contractors and third-party service providers performing work within the facility.
- Ensure all work is completed safely and complies with site requirements.
- Manage equipment warranties, vendor service agreements, and maintenance contracts.
- Verify contractors understand critical facility requirements before beginning work.

Compliance, Safety & Procedures

- Ensure strict compliance with all company, client, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain adherence to: Critical Facility Work Authorization (CWA) procedures Critical Awareness Processes Technical Bulletins Engineering standards and guidelines Emergency response and escalation procedures
- Maintain proper storage, handling, and disposal practices for hazardous materials.
- Conduct safety audits and enforce safe work practices.

Documentation & Reporting

- Maintain engineering logs, equipment records, inspections, and operational reports.
- Track maintenance metrics, KPIs, and system performance indicators.
- Provide regular operational updates to leadership and the client.
- Maintain accurate equipment documentation, drawings, and manuals.

Qualifications

Required Experience & Education

- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in critical facilities, data centers, or mission-critical environments.
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience managing engineering teams.
- Hands-on experience with: UPS systems Emergency generators Electrical switchgear Critical power infrastructure Mechanical and HVAC systems

Technical Skills

- Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems within mission-critical environments.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex facility and infrastructure issues.
- Experience with maintenance planning and reliability programs.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

- Critical Environment, or Data center operations experience.
- Corrigo experience.
- Maximo
- EPA 608 Certification.
- NFPA 70E training.
- Experience managing critical facilities supporting financial services or highly regulated environments.
- Universal EPA Certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment).

Physical Requirements

- Frequent climbing, kneeling, bending, lifting, and working overhead.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb ladders up to 30 feet.
- Comfortable working at heights and navigating rooftops to access equipment.

Shift Schedule:

- M-F, 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM
- Must be available for emergency response and after-hours support as needed.
- Ability to work varying schedules, including holidays when required.

The Wilson Data Center supports critical banking and technology operations for Truist , requiring the highest levels of reliability, safety, and operational excellence. JLL provides facility management and engineering services across a nationwide portfolio of mission-critical facilities, supporting some of the largest organizations in the world.

As Chief Engineer, you will play a key leadership role in protecting critical assets, maintaining infrastructure reliability, and ensuring uninterrupted operations in a fast-paced, high-performance environment.
