161,600 - 197,500
Annual bonus target, based on the base salary, with a potential payout of up to double the target (subject to personal and company performance):

Salary for the candidate will be determined taking into consideration a number of factors including: experience, skills, qualifications, anticipated contribution to role, internal equity, etc. The salary range presented above is based on a 35-hour workweek and would represent a majority of different candidate profiles. However, we encourage candidates who may fall outside of this range to apply as well.
About the role
Our Claims team is growing and is looking for a Director, Engineering Department to provide national leadership to the Forensic Engineering team within a property and casualty insurance environment.
The team provides technical expertise in support of complex claims, including cause and origin analysis, damage assessment, risk evaluation and the development of technical recommendations.
We are open to considering two complementary profiles:
- An engineering leader with experience in forensic engineering, technical expertise or claims;
- An experienced leader of technical teams within a claim’s environment, with strong leadership, operational management and transformation experience, without necessarily having an engineering background or professional engineering designation.
In both cases, the successful candidate must be able to lead a national team, mobilize managers and technical experts, and ensure consistency, quality and the ongoing evolution of practices across Canada.
Work model: Hybrid, combining office presence with regular travel to various regions across Canada.
Reporting to the Deputy Senior Vice-President, Claims, the successful candidate will lead a team of Forensic Engineering Managers located across several regions of Canada. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring national team cohesion, supporting the team’s growth and implementing the capabilities, processes, standards and practices required to meet the organization’s evolving needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Define the national vision, strategy and priorities for the Engineering team, in alignment with Claims and organizational objectives.
- Lead, engage, coach and develop the team’s managers to ensure consistently high performance across all regions.
- Foster the development of a high-performing, inclusive management team focused on collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Establish an effective structure, governance model and collaboration practices to support the growth and evolution of the national team.
- Harmonize processes, practices, quality standards and performance indicators while taking regional realities into consideration.
- Ensure national governance of complex technical, operational or reputational matters, ensuring that appropriate expertise, risk-management practices and escalation processes are applied.
- Collaborate with Engineering Managers and senior technical experts to ensure the quality, consistency and rigour of technical decisions across all regions.
- Advise the Senior Vice-President, Claims, and senior leadership on technical, operational, organizational and strategic matters related to the Engineering team.
- Lead or support national projects and initiatives related to transformation, continuous improvement and the implementation of new technologies.
- Oversee a portfolio of complex projects, including planning, prioritization, risk management, resource management, cost management and timelines.
- Develop and manage the national budget, as well as the capacity, resource and development plans for the Engineering team.
- Monitor results related to quality, productivity, turnaround times, customer experience and operational effectiveness.
- Collaborate closely with Claims teams and other partners across the country.
- Maintain trusted relationships with suppliers, external experts, strategic partners and professional organizations.
- Ensure compliance with the legal, regulatory, professional and ethical requirements applicable to engineering and claims activities.
- Promote knowledge sharing, innovation, succession planning and skills development within the team.
- Provide leadership on complex matters requiring a high level of judgment, coordination and national leadership.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, excellence and continuous improvement within the management team and throughout the organization.
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Applied Sciences, Technical Management or another relevant discipline. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in engineering, forensic engineering, technical expertise, claims or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience managing technical professionals, experts or specialized teams in a complex or highly technical environment.
- Minimum of three years of experience managing managers or other leaders. Forensic Engineering Managers with a strong track record leading technical teams and demonstrated ability and potential to lead a management team are also encouraged to apply.
- Experience leading geographically dispersed teams or operating in a multi-site environment is an asset.
- Experience in property and casualty insurance, claims or forensic engineering is an asset.
- Membership in a Canadian provincial engineering association or eligibility for professional licensure is an asset.
- Strong understanding of technical governance, risk management, quality standards and professional practices.
- Excellent strategic-thinking skills and the ability to translate a national vision into concrete and measurable action plans.
- Strong influencing, mobilization and collaboration skills with partners at various organizational levels, functions and regions.
- Experience managing complex projects, organizational transformation and change management initiatives.
- Experience in budget management, resource planning and performance monitoring.
- Sound judgment and the ability to make informed decisions in a complex and constantly changing environment.
- Proven ability to balance strategic, people-related, operational, financial, technical and regulatory considerations.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with experts, managers, senior leaders and external partners.
- For candidates based in Quebec, bilingualism in French and English is required. For candidates based in other provinces, bilingualism is considered an asset.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly to various regions across Canada.
