The Process Technician is responsible for manufacturing sensing elements used in advanced detection systems. This role operates production equipment, handles chemical-based products, and performs manual assembly and packaging while strictly following written Standard Operating Procedures and verbal instructions. The Process Technician maintains accurate batch records and data sheets, conducts in-process tests to ensure products meet specifications, and helps drive continuous improvement in a clean, climate-controlled environment that supports critical safety and detection technologies.
Responsibilities
- Operate equipment used to manufacture sensing elements and related products in accordance with manufacturing documentation and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Weigh, measure, and verify raw materials to ensure each batch contains the correct ingredients in the proper quantities.
- Maintain accurate inventory records of raw materials used in batch manufacturing.
- Keep detailed, up-to-date batch records and data sheets for products in process.
- Perform in-process tests, such as hardness, weight, variation, pH, and moisture content, to confirm that batches meet required specifications.
- Recognize equipment and product issues, notify appropriate personnel, and troubleshoot errors to achieve optimal production levels.
- Fabricate, inspect, and package chemical-based products following written procedures and quality standards.
- Carry out manual assembly and packaging of products, including sub-assembly, process assembly, inspection, modifications, upgrades, and rework.
- Assemble mechanical parts into sub-units or complete units using assembly instructions, process documents, travelers, and other manufacturing documentation.
- Apply mechanical assembly concepts, including pneumatic and optical micro assemblies, as required.
- Perform leak checks and vacuum seals on equipment to ensure proper operation and product integrity.
- Wire electronic components into sub-units or complete units according to manufacturing documentation.
- Organize materials and work areas to support efficient workflow and safe operations.
- Suggest improvements and participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to processes and manufacturing practices.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized working environment, including proper handling of lab equipment, tools, and chemicals.
- Use relevant computer applications, such as Microsoft Office, to maintain production records, documentation, and data sheets.
- Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate work and support production goals.
- Safely lift and move materials up to 50 pounds from ground to table height as needed for production activities.
Essential Skills
- Ability to follow written Standard Operating Procedures and verbal instructions accurately in a production environment.
- Experience operating manufacturing equipment and performing assembly or production tasks.
- Strong organizational skills for managing materials, work areas, and production documentation.
- Proficiency with relevant computer applications, including Microsoft Office, for record keeping and data entry.
- Ability to safely handle lab equipment, tools, and chemicals in a controlled environment.
- Good manual dexterity and meticulous attention to detail for mechanical and electronic assembly work.
- Ability to perform and document in-process tests such as hardness, weight, variation, pH, and moisture content.
- Capability to recognize equipment and product problems and take appropriate action to resolve or escalate issues.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate tasks and share information with team members.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds from ground to table height.
- Associate’s degree or a high school diploma/GED combined with 3 or more years of experience in an assembly or production environment.
- Self-motivated and dependable work style with an interest and ability to quickly learn new operations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in process improvement and manufacturing process optimization.
- Background in process engineering and lean manufacturing methodologies.
- Prior assembly experience, including mechanical, pneumatic, and optical micro assemblies.
- Familiarity with performing leak checks and vacuum seals on equipment.
- Experience wiring electronic components into sub-units or complete units.
- Prior lab equipment experience or academic or practical Background in chemistry or biology.
- Experience with continuous improvement initiatives in a production or manufacturing environment.
- Interest in working on cutting-edge technology related to bomb detection, chemical and biohazard detection, and illegal drug detection.
- Commitment to supporting products that enhance safety and protection for citizens and military personnel.
Work Environment
This role is based on-site in a very clean, climate-controlled facility and requires working in the office five days per week. The Process Technician works primarily at a designated test workbench, using lab equipment, tools, and manufacturing systems to assemble and test products. Work is performed as part of a collaborative team, while individual tasks and responsibilities are completed independently. The environment emphasizes safety, precision, and adherence to procedures, providing access to advanced technologies and well-organized work areas that support high-quality production and continuous improvement.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of West Lafayette, IN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $31.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
