Who we are looking for:
The Mortgage Repurchase Manager is responsible for leading the end-to-end management of mortgage loan repurchase, indemnification, and make-whole requests from investors, government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs), insurers, and other counterparties. This role oversees the evaluation, negotiation, resolution, and reporting of loan-level defects and repurchase demands while minimizing financial losses and mitigating mortgage loan defect risk.
This position provides strategic leadership while reviewing loan files, assessing underwriting and servicing compliance, determining defect materiality, and developing defensible rebuttal strategies. This role serves as a key liaison between Risk Management, Quality Control, Underwriting, Secondary Marketing, Capital Markets, Legal, Servicing, and external investors to ensure timely and effective resolution of repurchase claims.
This position is accountable for monitoring repurchase trends, identifying root causes, and driving corrective actions that strengthen loan quality and reduce future exposure. The Mortgage Repurchase Manager analyzes portfolio performance, investor findings, and regulatory requirements to recommend process improvements, enhance controls, and support enterprise risk management objectives. The position is responsible for requesting the transfer of funds from accounting and notifying and assisting capital markets and servicing with the transfer of servicing and collateral after repurchase funds have been received.
What youll do:
Repurchase Management: Lead the strategy, administration, and resolution of all mortgage repurchase and indemnification requests. Review, analyze, and rebut repurchase demands from investors, GSEs (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac), and agencies (HUD, VA).
Repurchase Management: Review, analyze, and rebut mortgage insurance recission demands from the insuring MI companies and appeal recission notices.
Repurchase Management: Manage the repurchase demand pipeline independently and meet all demand appeal deadlines.
Repurchase Management: Create and manage reports that track loan losses, defect trends, and key metrics to facilitate action plans to mitigate future repurchases. Create and provide reports for internal and external needs.
Repurchase Management: Manage requests for EPD, request payments, and determine trends and causes for default.
Repurchase Management: Manage relationships with investors, GSEs, mortgage insurers, and warehouse lenders.
File Investigation: Conduct deep-dive audits of underwriting, closing, and servicing files to determine root causes and validate defect claims.
Appeals & Negotiation: Draft formal rebuttals and negotiate settlements or alternative resolutions with investors to minimize financial buyback recourse.
Appeals & Negotiation: Negotiate Repurchase Alternatives and conduct Impasse calls when available.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with capital markets, legal, underwriting, sales, quality control, servicing, and finance/accounting teams to drive remediation, accountability, action plans, and assist in the identification of training opportunities.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with capital markets and financial teams to request repurchase funds and facilitate the return of collateral.
What youll need to be successful:
Success in this role requires deep expertise in mortgage origination and servicing practices, investor guidelines, regulatory requirements, and quality assurance principles. The Mortgage Repurchase Manager must demonstrate strong analytical, negotiation, and leadership skills while balancing risk mitigation, customer impact, investor expectations, and organizational objectives.
Regulatory Knowledge: Deep familiarity and daily interaction with Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac guidelines, HUD/VA requirements, and TRID/RESPA compliance standards.
Analytical Skills: Advanced ability to trace loan defects, complete a forensic loan analysis, and reverse underwrite to determine operational root causes and trends. Can also read complex mortgage contracts and rep and warranty recourse agreements.
Communication: Exceptional written and verbal skills for formal appeal letters and high-stakes financial negotiations.
Software Proficiency: Experience with Loan Origination Systems (LOS) like Empower, investor reporting tools, and Microsoft Excel.
High School Diploma / GED Required
This position requires 8+ years of experience in mortgage banking, focusing heavily on quality control, secondary marketing, underwriting, or repurchase management.
