Position Summary

Loenbro is building a dedicated construction layout function, and we are hiring the person to lead it. As Manager of Construction Layout, you will own how work gets positioned in the field across our national project portfolio — the control networks, the instruments, the model-to-field workflows, the people who run them, and the standards that make the output repeatable from one job to the next.

This is a builder's role. You will inherit inconsistent practices across regions and replace them with a single layout program: standardized equipment, documented procedures, calibrated instruments, trained technicians, and a measurable reduction in rework caused by bad position data. You will also be in the field often — on critical layouts, on new-project mobilizations, and alongside technicians you are developing.

The work spans industrial retrofit, mission-critical, and heavy commercial projects, much of it in live, operating facilities where existing conditions rarely match the drawings and accuracy is not negotiable.

Key Responsibilities

Layout Program Ownership

· Own the construction layout function company-wide: procedures, accuracy standards, tolerances, deliverable formats, and documentation requirements.

· Establish and enforce control network standards — primary and secondary control, benchmark protocols, network adjustment, and verification intervals.

· Define QA/QC for layout: independent check procedures, tolerance verification, error budgets, and what gets escalated when a check fails.

· Build the layout request and scheduling process so project teams get support when they need it rather than competing for it.

Team Leadership & Development

· Lead, schedule, and develop a distributed team of field layout technicians and layout engineers across multiple regions.

· Forecast layout labor demand against the project pipeline; staff projects and resolve conflicts across competing schedules.

· Build the training program: instrument operation, control theory, model-based workflows, safety, and field documentation.

· Conduct performance reviews, set development paths, and grow the bench so the function scales with the business.

Field Layout Execution

· Personally lead layout on high-risk, high-complexity, or first-of-kind work: tight-tolerance equipment setting, anchor bolt and embed layout, structural steel, underground utilities, and process piping tie-ins.

· Execute and oversee model-based layout using robotic total stations, GNSS/GPS rovers, and digital levels.

· Direct existing-conditions capture with 3D laser scanning; manage registration, point cloud QA, and scan-to-BIM deliverables.

· Perform and oversee as-built verification — scan-vs-model comparison, deviation reporting, and clash identification before fabrication release.

· Locate and verify subsurface and concealed utilities using GPR and related methods; coordinate with utility locates and site safety requirements.

Model-to-Field Coordination

· Serve as the link between BIM/VDC and field execution: validate that models are layout-ready and that coordinates, datums, and site orientation are correct before points are ever pulled.

· Manage coordinate systems, datum control, and site calibration across disciplines and trade partners.

· Extract, name, and manage layout point data; maintain revision discipline so crews are never working from a superseded set.

· Feed field-verified conditions back into the model so downstream design and fabrication reflect reality.

· Coordinate layout deliverables with detailers, fabricators, engineers, and subcontractor layout crews.

Technology & Equipment

· Own the layout equipment fleet: selection, procurement, assignment, calibration schedules, service, and replacement planning.

· Evaluate and pilot new layout and reality-capture technology; make the build/buy/rent recommendations.

· Administer layout software platforms and field data workflows; manage licensing and user access.

· Maintain vendor and service relationships for instruments, software, and calibration.

Safety & Compliance

· Champion Loenbro's safety culture; ensure every technician is trained and compliant on every site they enter.

· Ensure layout work meets OSHA, client site, and applicable code and standards requirements.

· Maintain the documentation trail that supports as-built certification and closeout.

Required Qualifications

· 8+ years of construction layout, field engineering, or construction surveying experience, including 3+ years leading or supervising layout personnel.

· Expert-level operation of robotic total stations and GNSS/GPS equipment in an active construction environment.

· Demonstrated ability to establish, adjust, and maintain construction control networks and to work confidently with coordinate systems and datums.

· Hands-on model-based layout experience — pulling points from a 3D model and putting them on the ground accurately.

· Working command of BIM coordination and how layout fits into the broader VDC workflow.

· Experience with 3D laser scanning and scan-to-BIM: field capture, registration, point cloud QA, and as-built comparison.

· Track record in industrial retrofit work in live, operating facilities where as-builts are unreliable and shutdown windows are short.

· Proven experience managing distributed field personnel across multiple sites or states.

· Strong command of MEP systems, power distribution, structural, and process piping enough to understand what you are laying out and why the tolerance matters.

· Valid driver's license and acceptable MVR; ability to pass client site background, drug, and safety screening.

· Ability to travel 60–75% and to work on active industrial sites — elevated work areas, confined spaces, uneven terrain, extended standing and walking, and full PPE.

· Associate's or Bachelor's degree in construction management, surveying, civil engineering, or related field — or equivalent demonstrated experience. We weight track record over transcript.

Preferred Qualifications

· PMP, CCM, or equivalent project or construction management certification.

· Mission-critical facility experience (data centers, healthcare, utility) where commissioning rigor and uptime drive the plan.

· Manufacturer certification on Trimble, Leica, Topcon, or FARO platforms.

· Experience with GPR and subsurface utility locating.

· Familiarity with 4D/5D platforms and construction technology stacks at the enterprise level.

· Prior experience building a layout or VDC function from scratch inside a self-perform contractor.

· Experience with building controls, automation, and instrumentation scope.

· OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, or client-specific safety credentials.
