Backup Systems Engineer

As a Systems Engineer on our team, you will directly support national defense missions by leading the engineering, deployment, and continuous improvement of our Backup Solution. You will design and evolve enterprise‑scale Backup solutions, collaborate with architects and engineers across adjacent technologies, and support modernization initiatives in cloud, automation, and datacenter operations. This role includes hands‑on engineering, documentation, training delivery, and subject‑matter expertise across Commvault Backup systems.

Key Responsibilities

You will design and document best‑practice data protection strategies for mission‑facing workloads using Commvault and develop hardened installation and configuration procedures aligned to Navy standards. You will provide engineering support to the operational network as needed and collaborate with engineers and solution owners to select and implement the best protection strategy per workload.

Required Qualifications

- 8 + years developing and administering enterprise backup platforms, with primary experience on Commvault (CommCell, Media Agents, deduplication, encryption, air ‑ gap/immutability) and exposure to other tools (e.g., Veeam, Backup Exec).

- 5+ years supporting Windows Server networks (Active Directory, DNS/DHCP, VSS, storage services) in production environments.

- 2+ years operating VMware vSphere (ESXi, vCenter, VM backups/restore workflows, VM snapshots, CBT, application‑consistent backups).

- 2+ years of PowerShell scripting for automation and operational tooling.

- Hands-on administration with Commvault and/or Rubrik at scale (multi-site, multi-tenant, diverse workloads)

- Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (routing, VLANs, firewalls) and secure data flows for backup networks.

- Experience with documentation: runbooks, SOPs, architecture diagrams, operational metrics.

- Active Secret ‑ level security clearance (or higher

- HS diploma or GED.

- IAT Level II certification :  Requires both an IA Certification (e.g., Security+ CE, or higher) * AND * an Operating Environment (OE) Certification (e.g., Windows OS certification, CCNA, SolarWinds, etc.) for CSWF compliance.

- Ability to support  on site delivery and collaborate with government stakeholders minimum 2 day per week , with potential expansion as directed by the client.

- Ability to perform OCONUS Travel  (typically 1-3 weeks trip duration, up to approx. 3 times a year, planned 3+months in advance)

Desired Qualifications

- Commvault certification (Professional or Master).

- Experience working in cross‑functional and matrixed teams.

- VMware certification (VCP‑DCV) and experience with Site Recovery/DR runbooks.

- Microsoft certifications (Windows Server/Hybrid Administrator) and experience with Active Directory Recovery.

- Additional Certifications: CISSP, SSCP

- Experience with storage platforms (NetApp, Dell/EMC, Pure), SAN/NAS, tape libraries, and key management.

- Experience with cloud backup integrations (Azure/AWS) and object storage targets.

- Excellent collaboration and communication skills.

- Bachelor’s degree in CS, IT, or related field.

Comprehensive Compensation & Benefits Package:

Salary at CaVU is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, education, training, certificates, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The expected salary range for this position is $90,000.00 - $120,000 . To drive fair pay practices for employees, CaVU conducts regular comparisons across our employee groups and the industry. The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, CaVU considers a number of factors when determining salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
