Reports to: Manager of Counselling Programs & Clinical Supervision

Program/ Department: Counselling

Anticipated Start Date: November 2, 2026

Positions available : 2 Full-Time positions (1 Permanent; 1 Term Certain for 1-year maternity leave coverage, with the possibility of extension)

Full-Time : 35 hours per week, 4 days per week (regular working hours may include evenings and weekends)

Pay rate: $30.98 per hour

This is a U5 Step 1 position in accordance with the salary scale in the Collective Agreement between Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre and MoveUP (COPE, Local 378).

Union: This is a Unionized position. Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre’s Union Representation is with MoveUP, (COPE, Local 378). Internal candidates will be prioritized.

Hybrid Work : This position involves in-office and/or in-person work arrangements to meet the preferences and/or needs of survivors accessing services, with eligibility to work remotely, as directed by management and to meet program needs.

Job Summary

The Sexual Assault Counsellor II will provide counselling, support groups, education and community referrals to survivors of marginalized genders: women, Two-Spirit, trans, non-binary and gender diverse people who have experienced violence in intimate relationships, sexual assault and/or childhood abuse. They will also deliver workshops for volunteers and community agencies on providing support for survivors of sexualized violence from a feminist, anti-oppression, anti-colonial perspective. As a member of the Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre team, the Sexual Assault Counsellor II will actively engage in events, social justice activities and other related community work.

Organizational Status

Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre is a feminist, anti-oppressive, decolonizing not-for-profit organization who changes society through advocacy, outreach and education. Operating on unceded Coast Salish Territories, Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre advocates for and provides counselling and victim services support to survivors of all marginalized genders who have experienced violence in intimate relationships, sexual assault, and/or childhood sexual abuse. Work Performed

Counselling Services

- Provide counselling, emotional support and advocacy to women, Two-Spirit, trans, non-binary and gender diverse survivors who have experienced sexualized violence within the feminist, anti-oppression and decolonizing framework

- Sixty (60) percent (approx. 17 hours/week) of the Counsellor’s worktime is spent on direct work with clients

- Listen and interpret needs in order to choose an appropriate service approach as guided by Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre’s standards

- Consult and/or deliver specialized organizational training or instruction

- Provide services in accordance with Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre’s policies/procedures and guidelines for the delivery of services

- Liaise with and provide referrals to applicable community agencies

- Work cooperatively and collaboratively with the program coordinator and Manager, Counselling Programs & Clinical Supervision to develop, implement and maintain programs, guidelines and strategies to ensure quality service delivery and to develop strategic direction for the program

Education & Outreach

- Provide educational and informational workshops to Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre volunteers and community members on a feminist/anti-oppression framework, feminist counselling and other related issues

- Provide education and support groups for survivors of violence, in accordance with Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre policies/procedures and guidelines

- Participate in making Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre’s internal culture and services more affirming and inclusive for all marginalized genders

Operations

- Attend all required Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre team meetings (e.g. staff meetings, individual and group clinical supervision, case consultations, and trainings)

- Participate on a minimum of one Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre committee

- Maintain counselling program records in accordance with Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre’s standards

- Collate and submit monthly and yearly reports, including statistical information on program activities to the Manager, Counselling Programs & Clinical Supervision

- Manage counselling program (individual & group) intakes and waiting lists as required by the Manager, Counselling Programs & Clinical Supervision

- Participate in yearly performance appraisal

- Participate, as appropriate, in interagency and government meetings

- Adhere to all Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre policies and procedures

- Ensure responsible use of Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre resources

- Perform other related duties as required by the Manager, Counselling Programs & Clinical Supervision

Working Conditions

Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre acknowledges that our work environment is directly impacted by all forms of oppression and the impact of colonialism. In this role, the Sexual Assault Counsellor II will almost always witness the impact that violence has on Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre’s service users and, by extension, the staff.

The pace of work for the Sexual Assault Counsellor II is not always controlled by the employee. This position is almost always faced with multiple demands/tasks with time pressures to finish.

Consequences of Error/Judgement

This position requires judgment, tact, discretion, and initiative. Errors may result in significant cost, loss of time and/or may affect the operation and delivery of programs which could damage the reputation of the organization. Poor judgement or ineffective communications with relevant institutions, community partners, and clients could result in strained relations that compromise the effectiveness and credibility of Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g. women’s or gender studies, sociology, psychology), or equivalent combination of experience and education

- 2-3 years of recent related experience

- Ability to support survivors across Provincial and Territorial jurisdictions

- Experience providing individual and group counselling support for women, Two-Spirit, trans, non-binary and gender diverse folks who have experienced violence with an intersectional feminist perspective

- Demonstrated success in working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds (e.g. cultural, religious, age, sexual orientation, etc.)

- Satisfactory completion of a criminal record check with vulnerable populations
