Joseph Gallagher Ltd is a leading civil engineering and tunnelling contractor, delivering complex infrastructure projects across the UK and internationally. Our expertise spans tunnelling, shafts, microtunnelling, pipejacking, deep excavations, and major civil engineering works.
Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Appointed Person (Lifting Operations) to join our team and provide specialist lifting support across multiple projects.
The Role
This is not a site-based position . The successful candidate will oversee lifting operations across several projects, working closely with our Work Winning team, Design Department, Project Teams, and Supply Chain partners from pre-construction through to project delivery.
The role will involve undertaking site visits during tender and pre-award stages, developing lifting strategies, reviewing temporary works constraints, liaising with designers regarding crane mat requirements, and ensuring all lifting operations are planned and executed in accordance with current legislation and industry best practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Appointed Person for multiple projects across the business.
- Develop and approve lift plans, risk assessments, and method statements.
- Support the Work Winning team during tender and pre-construction stages.
- Undertake site visits prior to project award to assess lifting requirements and constraints.
- Work closely with the Design Team to develop crane mat and lifting platform designs.
- Review crane locations, outrigger loads, ground bearing pressures, and exclusion zones.
- Coordinate lifting operations across numerous active sites.
- Provide technical support and guidance to operational and project teams.
- Liaise with clients, designers, crane suppliers, subcontractors, and site management teams.
- Ensure compliance with LOLER, PUWER, BS 7121, and all relevant industry standards.
- Promote best practice and continuous improvement in lifting operations throughout the business.
- Conduct audits and reviews of lifting operations and associated documentation.
Essential Requirements
- CPCS Appointed Person (A61) qualification or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years' experience working as an active Appointed Person.
- Extensive experience planning and managing complex lifting operations within civil engineering, infrastructure, tunnelling, or heavy construction environments.
- Excellent understanding of LOLER, PUWER, and BS 7121 requirements.
- Ability to assess lifting challenges from both operational and design perspectives.
- Strong technical knowledge of crane operations, lifting accessories, and ground bearing requirements.
- Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Willingness to travel to projects throughout the UK.
Desirable
- Experience within tunnelling, shaft sinking, microtunnelling, pipejacking, or major infrastructure projects.
- Temporary Works knowledge.
- Lift Supervisor qualification.
- Relevant engineering or construction qualification.
- Experience supporting pre-construction and tender activities.
