Manager, Fleet

Position Summary

The Fleet Manager oversees the maintenance, reliability, readiness, and overall management of all fleet assets within the Transport Division. This position is responsible for ensuring trucks, trailers, and other fleet equipment are properly maintained, safe, compliant, and available to support daily operations. The Fleet Manager directly supervises the company mechanic and manages preventive maintenance programs, tire programs, TPMS, maintenance vendors, repairs, and fleet maintenance records. This is a working manager position and requires the Fleet Manager to perform hands-on shop work as needed to support PMs, repairs, breakdowns, and operational demands. The Fleet Manager works closely with Transportation Management and Dispatch to minimize equipment downtime, improve fleet reliability, control maintenance costs, and maximize equipment availability.

Key Responsibilities

- Manage all fleet assets, including trucks, trailers, and related equipment.

- Manage preventive maintenance and required inspection schedules for trucks and trailers.

- Coordinate maintenance and repairs with Dispatch to minimize downtime and maintain equipment availability.

- Monitor equipment condition, recurring mechanical issues, and out-of-service units; recommend major repairs or replacement when appropriate.

- Maintain accurate fleet maintenance, repair, inspection, and asset records.

- Manage the company tire program, including tire condition, tread depth, replacement, casing/retread performance, inventory, and tire cost per mile.

- Manage tire and TPMS vendors, including pricing, service, warranties, and performance.

- Ensure TPMS systems are operational and identified tire pressure or temperature issues are addressed promptly.

- Identify abnormal tire wear and premature failures and take corrective action to improve tire life and reduce roadside failures.

- Directly supervise, coach, and manage the company mechanic.

- Prioritize and assign shop work based on safety, PM requirements, equipment availability, and operational needs.

- Monitor repair quality, productivity, turnaround time, and repeat repairs.

- Maintain a safe, organized, and productive shop with appropriate parts, fluids, tires, and maintenance supplies.

- Perform or assist with PMs, inspections, troubleshooting, and mechanical repairs as workload or operational needs require.

- Coordinate roadside breakdowns, towing, outside repairs, parts, and specialized service vendors as needed.

- Determine whether repairs should be completed internally or through an outside vendor.

- Manage fleet-related vendors and review service quality, turnaround time, pricing, invoices, and warranty opportunities.

- Ensure fleet equipment is maintained in safe operating condition and meets applicable DOT and company requirements.

- Ensure driver-reported defects and inspection deficiencies are addressed promptly and remove unsafe equipment from service when necessary.

- Monitor fleet maintenance costs, downtime, and equipment reliability and identify opportunities to improve performance and reduce operating costs.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

- 3–5 years of commercial fleet maintenance or heavy-duty truck/trailer experience.

- Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred.

- Strong working knowledge of diesel trucks, commercial trailers, preventive maintenance, and mechanical troubleshooting.

- Tank trailer maintenance experience preferred.

- Working knowledge of DOT inspection and maintenance requirements.

- Experience managing tire programs, maintenance vendors, and fleet expenses.

- Ability and willingness to perform hands-on mechanical work.

- Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and fleet maintenance/telematics platforms; Samsara experience preferred.

Schedule & Work Expectations

- Full-time: Monday–Friday.

- Combination of management, administrative, and hands-on shop responsibilities.

- Expected to provide shop coverage and perform mechanical work as operational needs require.

- Occasional after-hours and weekend availability may be required for urgent breakdowns or equipment issues.
