Chief Engineer | Beaufort Compass Hotel

Shaner Hotels is seeking an experienced and hands-on Chief Engineer to lead the Engineering Department and oversee the operation, maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance of all hotel building systems and equipment. This leadership role is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, functionality, and appearance of the property while maintaining compliance with Shaner Hotels, franchise brand, OSHA, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

The Chief Engineer develops and manages preventative maintenance programs, supervises engineering associates, oversees departmental budgets, and works collaboratively with all hotel departments to provide a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained environment for guests and associates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Direct and oversee all Engineering Department operations, including preventative maintenance, repairs, capital projects, and facility improvements.
* Develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for guestrooms, public areas, mechanical systems, and hotel equipment.
* Schedule engineering work in coordination with the Rooms Division and other operational departments to minimize guest disruption.
* Delegate daily work assignments, establish priorities, and oversee special maintenance projects.
* Perform final inspections of completed maintenance work and ensure timely completion of all work orders.
* Perform engineering and maintenance duties as operational needs require.
* Maintain and repair HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fire protection, life safety, and building systems.
* Ensure all hotel safety equipment is inspected, maintained, and compliant with federal, state, local, and franchise requirements, including required quarterly and annual inspections.
* Serve as Chairperson of the hotel's Safety Committee and promote a culture of workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
* Maintain thorough knowledge of hotel emergency procedures and coordinate emergency repairs as needed.
* Ensure the proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals in accordance with OSHA regulations and manufacturer guidelines.
* Maintain the proper use, maintenance, calibration, cleaning, and storage of all engineering tools and equipment.
* Enforce safe work practices, including lockout/tagout procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE), and appropriate safety signage.
* Develop, manage, and monitor the Engineering Department's annual operating budget while maintaining effective cost controls.
* Recruit, hire, train, coach, schedule, develop, and evaluate Engineering associates to promote productivity, accountability, and professional growth.
* Respond promptly to maintenance requests from guests and associates, ensuring timely resolution and outstanding customer service.
* Coordinate with outside contractors and vendors for specialized repairs, inspections, and capital improvement projects.
* Maintain accurate maintenance records, equipment logs, inspection reports, and regulatory documentation.
* Be available to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, evenings, and varied shifts, as business needs require.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

* High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational training, trade school certification, or college coursework in Engineering, Building Maintenance, or a related field preferred.
* State-issued trade license or certification (electrical, HVAC, plumbing, boiler, refrigeration, or similar) preferred, where applicable.
* Minimum of **two (2) years of hotel maintenance engineering experience**; previous supervisory or management experience preferred.
* Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
* Comprehensive knowledge of hotel mechanical systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, boilers, generators, elevators, fire alarm, and life safety systems.
* Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, building codes, fire codes, electrical codes, plumbing codes, mechanical codes, health codes, and environmental regulations.
* Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, plumbing schematics, equipment manuals, and manufacturer specifications.
* Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs, capital planning, and facilities management.
* Experience preparing departmental budgets, controlling maintenance expenses, and managing vendor relationships.
* Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and repair skills across multiple building trades.
* Ability to safely operate power tools, hand tools, testing equipment, meters, and other maintenance equipment.
* Knowledge of proper chemical handling, storage, and disposal procedures.
* Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to communicate effectively with guests, associates, contractors, and hotel leadership.
* Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple projects, and respond effectively during emergencies.
* Ability to perform physically demanding work, including standing, climbing ladders, lifting equipment, bending, kneeling, and working in confined spaces.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding guests, hotel operations, and proprietary information.
* Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
