Job Description:

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) is the state agency that focuses solely on policies, programs, and services for people with mental health challenges, substance use disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, or any combination of these. As Georgia’s public safety net, DBHDD operates six field offices and five hospitals throughout the state within three program areas: behavioral health, developmental disabilities, and hospital services.

Located on 174 Acres in DeKalb County, Georgia Regional Hospital in Atlanta operates 300 licensed, accredited inpatient beds in three major program areas: Adult Mental Health, Forensic Services, and Developmental Disabilities. In addition, GRH/Atlanta also offers inpatient and outpatient Dental Services.

Internal Medicine Physician — Skilled Nursing Facility

Location: Decatur, Georgia

Employment Status: Regular Full-Time

Schedule: This is a full-time, on-site position working 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The physician’s schedule includes weekly Individual Recovery Plan meetings, daily rounds with both nursing home and skilled nursing unit patients, acute-care evaluations as needed, care coordination with the interdisciplinary team, and completion of required clinical documentation and follow-up.

Georgia Regional Hospital Atlanta is seeking a full-time Internal Medicine Physician to provide medical care for residents in a 32-bed skilled nursing facility located within one of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities’ state hospitals.

This unit primarily serves long-term residents with chronic medical conditions. Approximately half of the residents also have behavioral health needs, creating an opportunity for a physician who values thoughtful, team-based care for individuals with complex medical and psychiatric histories.

The Opportunity

As the Internal Medicine Physician, you will provide primary medical care in a skilled nursing and long-term care setting. You will work closely with an interdisciplinary team that includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nutrition services, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, psychiatry, psychology, and other therapeutic services.

This role is well suited for a physician who enjoys continuity of care, collaborative practice, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the health and quality of life of long-term residents.

Position Responsibilities

- Provide primary medical care for residents in a skilled nursing and long-term care setting.
- Complete new admissions, routine follow-up visits, acute-care evaluations, and required recertification visits.
- Manage chronic medical conditions and respond to acute changes in condition.
- Review laboratory, imaging, and consultant results and coordinate appropriate follow-up.
- Collaborate with nursing, rehabilitation services, specialists, residents, families, and behavioral health providers.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care planning and support goals-of-care discussions when appropriate.
- Complete timely and accurate clinical documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Coordinate transfers to the emergency department or hospital when clinically necessary and assist with transitions back to the facility.

Minimum Qualifications

- MD or DO degree.
- Completion of an Internal Medicine residency program.
- Active, unrestricted Georgia medical license or eligibility for Georgia licensure.
- Active DEA registration or ability to obtain DEA registration.

Preferred Qualifications

- Board certification or board eligibility in Internal Medicine.
- Experience in skilled nursing, long-term care, post-acute care, geriatrics, hospital medicine, or primary care.
- Experience working with individuals who have chronic medical conditions and behavioral health needs.
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
