Leadman - Traffic Control

Baldwin Paving Company, Inc. is currently seeking a Leadman – Traffic Control to join our Traffic Control Division. This is a full-time position that reports to the Site Foreman.

The ideal candidate will have previous traffic control experience, with experience supporting paving, milling, or roadway construction strongly preferred. This position will lead a crew of approximately 2–3 Flaggers, coordinate daily traffic control needs with Foremen and Superintendents, and ensure traffic control setups are completed safely, correctly, and on time.

This position requires the ability to work both day and night shifts, including weekends when necessary, based on project and operational needs.

SUMMARY / JOB SCOPE:

The Leadman – Traffic Control is responsible for leading and working alongside a traffic control crew supporting road, bridge, highway, paving, milling, and other heavy construction projects. This position coordinates daily traffic control requirements with Foremen and Superintendents and ensures traffic control operations are performed in accordance with applicable traffic control plans, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) specifications, including applicable Section 150 requirements, and company safety requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Lead, direct, and work alongside a crew of approximately 2–3 Flaggers.

- Coordinate with Foremen and Superintendents to understand daily production goals, traffic control needs, and required setups.

- Plan and organize crew activities to ensure traffic control equipment and devices are set up safely, correctly, and in sufficient time to support scheduled construction operations.

- Assign daily work and train, coach, and provide hands-on instruction to less experienced crew members.

- Set up, maintain, adjust, and remove temporary traffic control devices, including signs, barricades, drums, cones, lane closures, road closures, and detours.

- Perform traffic control and flagging activities and monitor work zones throughout the shift, making necessary adjustments as traffic or construction conditions change.

- Identify hazardous or improper traffic control conditions and take appropriate corrective action.

- Drive crew members, traffic control devices, tools, and equipment to and from assigned job sites.

- Operate company commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), including vehicles used to transport or tow traffic control equipment and trailers, as assigned.

- Load, secure, transport, and unload traffic control devices, materials, tools, and equipment.

- Conduct required vehicle inspections and inspect traffic control equipment for damaged, missing, or defective items.

- Maintain vehicles, trailers, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition.

- Communicate effectively with Flaggers, Foremen, Superintendents, and other construction personnel regarding job-site conditions, changes, problems, and equipment needs.

- Follow company safety policies and applicable local, state, and federal requirements and participate in required safety meetings and training.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:

- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

- Previous traffic control experience is required.

- Traffic control experience supporting paving, milling, roadway construction, or similar heavy highway construction is strongly preferred.

- Previous experience leading, directing, or training employees is preferred.

- Must possess a valid driver's license in good standing and maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) in accordance with company requirements.

- Must be qualified and authorized to operate assigned company commercial motor vehicles (CMVs).

- Must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, required DOT medical certification for assigned driving duties.

- Current Flagger and/or Worksite Traffic Control Supervisor (WTCS) certification is preferred. Candidates who do not currently possess required certifications must be able and willing to successfully complete company-required training and certification.

- Must have knowledge of, or the ability to learn and apply, MUTCD requirements, applicable GDOT traffic control requirements, traffic control plans, and safe work-zone practices.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Ability to effectively lead, direct, and train a small traffic control crew.

- Ability to coordinate effectively with Foremen, Superintendents, and other construction personnel.

- Ability to read, understand, and follow traffic control plans, diagrams, instructions, and applicable traffic control requirements.

- Strong organizational, problem-solving, communication, and situational-awareness skills.

- Ability to recognize changing or unsafe traffic and work-zone conditions and respond appropriately.

- Ability to safely use traffic control and signaling devices and apply safe traffic control practices in changing or stressful conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

- Work is primarily performed outdoors on active roadway construction projects near moving vehicular traffic, construction vehicles, and heavy equipment.

- Work is performed during both daylight and nighttime hours and in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.

- Employees may be exposed to loud noise, dust, asphalt fumes, gasoline, diesel exhaust, and other conditions associated with roadway construction.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and sit for extended periods.

- Ability to safely lift, carry, install, position, and move up to 50 pounds, including traffic control signs, drums, cones, barricades, tools, and equipment.

- Requires sufficient strength, manual dexterity, mobility, and multi-limb coordination to safely perform assigned duties and operate equipment and vehicle controls.

- Ability to move and respond quickly when necessary due to changing traffic or work-zone conditions.

Other Requirements:

Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times. Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required. Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary. Report to the assigned job site in proper attire and ready to begin work at the designated start time. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Safety Manual. Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA and company policy. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position: Coveralls, Fall Protection, Gloves, Welding Gloves, Hard Hat, Hearing Protection, Padlocks for Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, Safety Glasses, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, Welding Aprons, Welding Helmet, Welding Shield.

This is a full-time position.
