Summary
JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Manager, Medical Imaging, the Interventional Imaging Clinical Educator/Instructor works in a team-based environment and is responsible and accountable for providing modality-specific clinical education and clinical instruction. This involves development, planning, delivery and evaluation of clinical/technical education programs for Medical Radiography Technologists working in Interventional Radiology (IR), Operating Room (OR) and Cardiac Cath Lab, through the identification of educational needs, development and provision of educational content, and accountability for learning outcomes. The Interventional Imaging Clinical Educator/Instructor provides clinical/practice support, formal training and education to designated staff and is responsible for overseeing the organization’s clinical experience of radiology students during their OR rotation. Performs and demonstrates expertise in Interventional, Cardiac Cath Lab, and Operating Room Imaging practice and performs technical functions, as required. This position practices in accordance with professional practice guidelines as outlined by CAMRT and/or other relevant national professional associations.
QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training and ExperienceCertification with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists’ (CAMRT). Completion of an advanced specialty program in Interventional Imaging and three (3) years recent, related experience in IR and/or Cardiac Cath Lab or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Completion of an Intravenous Therapy training course when required by site practice. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification - Basic Life Support (BCLS) level. Completion of a professional instructional program for teaching at the college level (such as Educator Pathway 1 and 2, Instructors Diploma Program or Adult Education Certificate or related health care degree) and recent experience creating educational materials, implementing education strategies, utilizing knowledge translation abilities and experience mentoring staff and/or students, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Skills and Abilities•Demonstrated knowledge of standards of practice and guidelines for Medical Imaging practitioners established by the CAMRT and/or other relevant national professional associations. Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic techniques.•Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based practice related to designated modality. •Demonstrated skill in Interventional Radiology, Operating Room and Cardiac Imaging techniques and the use of applicable equipment and supplies.•Broad knowledge of adult education theory and recognized experience with curriculum and instructional design principles and practices. •Broad Knowledge of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. Ensures that the education priorities related to service delivery and access and flow of the designated program area are met. 2.Develops, implements and evaluates formal educational materials to meet staff and site-specific needs to support the ongoing roll-out of new interventional imaging department initiatives. 3.Provides site-specific formal training and education including elbow support to staff teaching strategies to modify techniques to meet the unique needs of the patients, in alignment with established professional practice standards. Provides formal education on the use of equipment, diagnostic and interventional procedures, quality control and quality assurance. Arranges and presents in-services and formal education sessions including simulation, to respond to learning needs. Provides resources and other materials to clinical areas.4.Develops, reviews and modifies learning resources for team members and/or patients/families using established educational and practice standards, determining match between content and delivery method and providing feedback to other developers to ensure resources are current, relevant, cost effective and coordinated. Contributes as a subject matter expert to the development of any relevant Decision Support Tools. 5.Gathers feedback and evaluates and monitors the effectiveness of clinical education programs, activities and resources by tracking learning outcomes and staff feedback. Maintains records of formal educational activities offered, maintains records of attendance, and identifies opportunities for quality improvement to inform the planning and improvement of future educational/training sessions.6.Provides modality-specific interprofessional orientation for the site, schedule and programs including review of relevant practice resources, standard operating procedures, available equipment, quality control, quality assurance and workflows. Liaises with the Manager and IR and Cardiac Cath Lab Supervisors and/or Radiological Technologist Clinical Instructor to ensure orientation plans include provision of formal education, mentoring and elbow support and ensures staff complete relevant education materials and modules during their qualifying period. 7.Under the direction of the Manager and in collaboration with the IR and Cardiac Cath Lab Supervisors and/or Radiological Technologist Clinical Instructor, supports the professional development of formal learning plans through the provision of formal education and technical support to meet specific or established learning goals. Observes clinical practice and relays information about observed/identified clinical competency gaps or performance concerns back to Manager or designate for review and remedial action. 8.Identifies IR and Cardiac Cath Lab program specific department learning needs and trends/gaps in practice and reports them to the Manager and/or Supervisors as appropriate. Works collaboratively to implement site-specific formal education programs, coaching, orienting and/or training to address these gaps. 9.In collaboration with Manager and Supervisors, introduces new/modified procedures and equipment to the department through the development of written policies and procedures, delivery of staff training, and updates to workflows.10.Ensures staff have the skills, knowledge and competence necessary to perform the applicable medical imaging exams and procedures and reflects evidence-based practice in accordance with established practice guidelines. 11.Maintains awareness of current developments within IR, Operating Room and Cardiac Cath Lab imaging theory and practice, related equipment and training requirements/accreditation standards by reviewing and evaluating technical literature/material such as journals, videos, publications, and CAMRT competency profiles, practice guidelines and Academic Institutions Education Programs. CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR 12.Coordinates student clinical instruction within Medical Imaging by assigning student rotations through OR, determining the goals and objectives within each rotation, developing checklists for clinical instruction and liaising with designated staff to discuss instruction requirements/schedules to ensure proper exposure to all clinical activities in accordance with the requirements of the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists’ (CAMRT) record of clinical experience. 13.Evaluates student progress and/or supports technologists to evaluate student progress and provide students with feedback during clinical practicum by implementing an evaluation system, setting up evaluation criteria for specified tasks, determining successful completion of tasks and providing feedback to ensure training goals and objectives are met. 14.Acts as a liaison between various personnel including departmental supervisors, technologists, students, other MI/hospital staff and academic institutions regarding the training program by receiving and providing information regarding student progress reports, departmental concerns and requirements to ensure adequate student supervision is provided by qualified technologists and the clinical standards of the training program are maintained. 15.Develops, implements, evaluates, revises and delivers education sessions and workshops to technologists focused on effective teaching strategies, clinical instruction and student supervision. Provides resources, guidelines and supporting materials to enhance the technologist’s skills when working with students. Responsible and accountable for the student training and learning outcomes when arranging staff instruction of students. •Educates technologists on student assessment tools, evaluation methods and how do deliver constructive and supportive feedback that promotes student growth and development. •Assists staff to navigate difficult conversations with students related to performance issues or concerns. •Ensures technologists are familiar with evaluation tools to assess student competencies and offer assistant in interpreting and applying evaluation criteria in the clinical setting. •Offers ongoing support to technologists working with students. 16.Assists students to meet evaluation standards by providing counseling and guidance in matters related to education and study skills and by developing remedial training programs. Maintains student records for the clinical experience portion of the program and ensures student progress reports are sent to the applicable educational institution. 17.Develops and implements a student orientation program in collaboration with others to determine requirements and recommendations, creating student department orientation checklists for new students, compiling information packages to ensure students are familiar with departmental policies, procedures and standards of practice and distributing them as appropriate. Provides orientation for new students by discussing expectations to ensure students are familiar with departmental policies and procedures, standards of practice and radiation safety standards. 18.Communicates with other clinical instructors and liaises with external agencies such as academic institutions and CAMRT regarding training initiatives and student progress by providing student progress reports and attending clinical working committees/liaison meetings to gather information to ensure practicum course content reflects the most recent changes in practices, procedures and technological advances. Participates on professional and academic committees, as directed. 19.Collaborates with the Clinical Education team, other educators and practice leaders across PHC to ensure alignment of best practices for educational theory and practice and to remain connected with developing best practices within the profession. Gathers and shares information about PHC-wide educational sessions.OTHER20.Maintains clinical competency and performs technical work as required by receiving patients, explaining procedures, correlating clinical history with examination to be performed. 21.Performs interventional procedures in accordance with established procedures by completing requisitions and related paperwork including laboratory forms and entering patient information into the Electronic Health Record and image processing systems such as CVI Source as required. Correlates clinical history with examination to be performed, positions patient and explains clinical procedures, operates radiographic and computerized imaging equipment including processing images and archiving of acquired data, labelling permanent records and checking technical results to ensure departmental standards are followed. 22.Assists physicians performing interventional procedures, treatments and other related diagnostic cases across Interventional Radiology, Cardiac and Pain areas by prepping patients, applying aseptic technique, setting up sterile trays for a wide range of image guided procedures and acting as circulation and scrub support when required. 23.Provides Clinical/Technical Specialist expertise on behalf of the program and has delegated responsibility and accountability for the provision of clinical or technical specialist services to health science professionals within the IR, OR, and Cardiac Cath Lab departments through the provision of formal clinical or technical consultation and advisory to own or other organizations within specialized area of the profession. 24.Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel. 25.Performs other related duties as assigned
