About this role

The purpose of this position is to inspect and maintain cathodic protection systems and equipment used for corrosion control to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures. Corrosion control utilizes chemistry, electricity, physics, metallurgy, and other sciences to mitigate or control corrosion damage through the application of cathodic protection to control the mechanical, electrical, and chemical aspects involved in the deterioration of a material (corrosion).

For the Apprentice position: The purpose of this position is to provide a path for entry, training, and development for the successful candidate to have a career in the complex corrosion control discipline.

The duties listed are activities associated with the various levels of the Corrosion Department progression. This progression covers the following general titles:

- Corrosion Apprentice/Trainee
- Corrosion Technician I
- Corrosion Technician II
- Corrosion Technician III

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Corrosion Apprentice

The Apprentice position is responsible for learning about, developing skills, and performing the following:

- Basic and timely cathodic protection troubleshooting.
- Timely creation of remediation work orders (e.g., install anodes, clear short, install insulator, repair / replace test station).
- Follows through with necessary departments to ensure timely completion.
- Troubleshooting and maintenance of rectifiers
- Maintaining half-cells in accordance with procedures
- Monitoring of corrosion control records to ensure compliance.
- Review reports from company designated database systems as needed.

With assistance from a more senior technician (Level II or III) or departmental leadership, the apprentice is responsible for the following:

- Provide relevant support / inspection for cathodic protection needs on engineering / construction projects.
- Provide corrosion control-related support to internal departmental activities or external contract support as needed.
- Accurately enter compliance data into the appropriate system of record in a timely fashion.
- Participates (as needed) in regulatory audits to ensure success.
- Complete self-study workbook (prerequisite requirement for apprentice training and Level I evaluation)

Corrosion Technician I

The Corrosion Technician I Position is assigned, but not limited to an operational area where they are responsible for the following:

- Basic and timely cathodic protection troubleshooting.
- Timely creation of remediation work orders (e.g., install anodes, clear shorts, install insulator, repair / replace test station). Follows through with necessary departments to ensure timely completion.
- Troubleshooting and maintenance of rectifiers
- Maintaining half-cells in accordance with procedures
- Monitoring of corrosion control records to ensure compliance in the company designated databases and database systems.
- Generate reports from company designated database systems as needed.
- Provides relevant support / inspection for cathodic protection needs on engineering / construction projects.
- Provides corrosion control-related support to internal departments or external contract support.
- Accurately enters new facilities and compliance data into the appropriate system of record in a timely fashion.
- Participates (as needed) in regulatory audits to ensure compliance.

Corrosion Technician II

The Corrosion Technician II Position is assigned, but not limited to an operational area where they are responsible for the following:

- Timely cathodic protection troubleshooting.
- Timely creation of remediation work orders (e.g., install anodes, clear short, install insulator, repair / replace test station).
- Follows through with necessary departments to ensure timely completion.
- Provide guidance/assistance to Corrosion Apprentice/Trainee/Level I Technicians.
- Intermediate design of cathodic protection systems.
- Intermediate troubleshooting and maintenance of rectifiers
- Calibrating half-cells in accordance with procedures
- Monitoring of corrosion control records to ensure compliance in the company designated databases and database systems.
- Perform Intermediate Indirect Surveys (CIS, DCVG, ACVG, ACCA, etc.)
- Corrosion Contractor Oversight
- Generate reports from company designated database systems as needed.
- Provides relevant support / inspection for cathodic protection needs on engineering / construction projects.
- Provides corrosion control-related support to internal departments or external contract support.
- Accurately enters new facilities and compliance data into the appropriate system of record in a timely fashion.
- Participates (as needed) in regulatory audits to ensure compliance.

Corrosion Technician III

The Corrosion Technician III Position is assigned, but not limited to an operational area where they are responsible for the following:

- Timely cathodic protection troubleshooting.
- Timely creation of remediation work orders (e.g., install anodes, clear short, install insulator, repair / replace test station).
- Follows through with necessary departments to ensure timely completion.
- Provide guidance/assistance to Corrosion Apprentice/Trainee/Level I/Level II Technicians.
- Advanced design of cathodic protection systems.
- Advanced troubleshooting and maintenance of rectifiers
- Calibrating half-cells in accordance with procedures
- Monitoring of corrosion control records to ensure compliance in the company designated databases and database systems.
- Perform & Analyze Indirect Surveys (CIS, DCVG, ACVG, ACCA, etc.)
- Provide Corrosion Contractor Oversight & Schedule Direction
- OQ Evaluation of lower-level Corrosion technicians
- Generate reports from company designated database systems as needed.
- Provides relevant support / inspection for cathodic protection needs on engineering / construction projects.
- Provides corrosion control-related support to internal departments or external contract support.
- Accurately enters new facilities and compliance data into the appropriate system of record in a timely fashion.
- Participates (as needed) in regulatory audits to ensure compliance.

Qualifications by Level

Corrosion Apprentice

Education, Certifications/Licenses

Required

- Associates degree - technical / trade school with math, electrical, or science-based curriculum
- OR
- High school diploma with equivalent combination of education and experience
- The Corrosion Control Management Team will evaluate a candidate’s equivalent education and experience to determine if the individual meets the basic qualifications for the position.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Progression Requirements

- Within 180 days, the candidate must successfully complete the company’s designated corrosion control apprentice training and be evaluated to a Corrosion Technician Level I position. If the candidate is unable to demonstrate qualifications and proficiency in the knowledge and skill requirements of the discipline, they must vacate the position.

Preferred

- NACE CP1 (Cathodic Protection Tester)
- NACE Corrosion Technician Certification

Related Work Experience

- Corrosion related or Electrical experience.

Corrosion Technician I

Progression Requirements

- A Level I technician may be evaluated to progress to a level II technician after serving in the level I technician role for a minimum of one (1) year.
- A Level I is required to successfully progress to a level 2 technician within
- Seven and a half (7.5) years after becoming a level I technician or vacate the position (Local 19 at Nicor Gas).
- Four (4) years after becoming a level I technician or vacate the position (Local 1997 at AGL).

- NACE CP1 (Cathodic Protection Tester)
- NACE Corrosion Technician Certification

Related Work Experience

Required

- 1 year of corrosion control experience
- OR
- Successful completion of Company designated Corrosion Apprentice/Trainee training and Level I evaluation.

- Corrosion Related or Electrical experience.

NOTE: In certain operational areas, this job is part of a bargaining agreement. Any deviation to the progression requirements as part of a bargaining agreement will take precedence over the requirements listed above.

Corrosion Technician II

Progression Requirements

- A Level II technician may be evaluated to progress to a level III technician after serving in the level II technician role for a minimum of one (1) year and meets all the requirements.

Corrosion Technician III

- Frequent local travel with occasional (5 - 20%) overnight travel.
