The Control Systems Engineer will:

- Operate, maintain and troubleshoot existing test control systems.
- Perform setup and modification of existing test control systems.
- Specify and tune feedback control loop algorithms for optimum performance.
- Design and implement new test control systems.
- Coordinate transducer and actuator installation, writing technical procedures to be performed by technicians.

Job Duties will include :

- Coordination with NASA customers across organizations to ensure mission success.
- Work with a diverse team of civil servants and contractors to design, develop, set up, and perform structural testing on space flight qualification hardware, and other mission critical hardware.
- Participate in Beyond Zero Safety Culture, attend safety meetings, task meetings, design reviews, and test readiness reviews as requested to support ESSCA and customer requirements.
- Develop and deliver reports and presentations as requested to support ESSCA and customer requirements.
- Perform safety and certification training to support ESSCA and customer requirements.

BS degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics with at least 2 years of experience in control systems is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum 4 years of experience; Masters with at least 8 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years of experience.

The ideal candidate will be an Engineer with a strong sampling of the following skills and a desire to learn in depth:

- Excellent verbal and writing skills.
- Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic fluid control systems, valves and actuators for automated control of position, force, pressure and velocity.
- Experience with electric motor control systems, Variable Frequency Drives or servo-motors.
- Experience with embedded systems and microcontrollers such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino, cRIO or similar.
- Experience with communication protocols such as ethercat, profinet, RS-232, RS485, CAN, I2C, SPI
- Experience with data acquisition hardware such as cDAQ, PXI, HBK, Dewetron, Dewesoft, Gantner or similar hardware.
- Knowledge of basic instrumentation applications - utilizing strain gauges, load cells, pressure transducers, thermocouples, and displacement sensors.
- Desire to conduct detailed hands-on work in a Lab testing environment on sub scale models to full scale structures in some of NASA’s largest indoor and outdoor test facilities.

Essential Functions:

Work Environment:

General office environment (100%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<10%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
