Coding Quality Educator

As a Coding Quality Educator, you will help providers and clinical leaders navigate complex coding requirements while supporting the integrity of professional billing across UVA Health.

This full-time, fully remote opportunity is designed for an experienced coding professional ready to move beyond production coding into a consultative role focused on provider auditing, individualized education, and complex coding research. You will serve as a trusted resource for assigned specialties, with a particular focus on supporting Neurosurgery.

The Role

The Coding Quality Educator combines technical coding expertise with relationship building, education, and independent judgment. You will manage assigned professional billing audits in MDaudit, communicate findings directly to physicians and other healthcare providers, and translate authoritative coding guidance into clear, practical recommendations.

Your work will include:

- Completing assigned provider coding audits accurately, consistently, and within established timelines

- Meeting directly with physicians and other healthcare providers to review audit findings and deliver individualized coding and documentation education

- Serving as the primary coding and documentation resource for assigned specialties

- Supporting Neurosurgery and other surgical specialties through focused auditing, education, and coding consultation

- Researching complex coding questions and applying authoritative professional coding guidance

- Participating in provider and clinical leadership meetings as a coding and documentation subject matter expert

- Developing presentations, coding tip sheets, job aids, and other targeted educational resources

- Identifying coding and documentation trends and creating proactive education to address opportunities

- Building collaborative working relationships with providers, clinical leaders, coding colleagues, and education team members

A typical day may include completing an audit, researching a nuanced surgical coding question, preparing educational materials, and meeting with a provider to explain documentation or coding recommendations. You will have the autonomy to organize your workload and exercise sound professional judgment while remaining connected to a collaborative team that shares knowledge and supports one another across specialties.

The strongest fit will be an experienced professional Coder who has progressed into auditing, education, quality, compliance, or coding advisory work. Substantial surgical coding experience is highly valued, and direct Neurology or Neurosurgery coding experience is especially desirable. Success requires a commitment to accuracy, strong research capabilities, effective presentation skills, and the ability to make complex coding guidance understandable and actionable for clinical audiences.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor’s Degree required or relevant experience may be considered in lieu of Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 5 years relevant experience required. 5 years of coding experience in a tertiary setting preferred.

Licensure: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires sitting for prolonged periods, frequently traveling (no more than two miles); Repetitive motion: (Typing). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull less than 20lbs. May be exposed to cold, heat and outdoor climate.

The pay range for this role is $51,429.00 - $102,857.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
