Position Purpose :
The Maintenance Technician I supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of North Central University facilities through preventative maintenance, mechanical troubleshooting, repairs, and inspections. This position maintains building systems and equipment; leads snow and ice removal operations; supervises snow removal crews; and performs maintenance and repair of snow removal and grounds equipment to ensure a safe and well-maintained campus environment.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Facility Maintenance, Mechanical Systems & Snow Operations (90%)
- Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on campus buildings, mechanical systems, and equipment.
- Respond to maintenance work orders and complete repairs in a timely and professional manner.
- Conduct routine inspections to identify maintenance needs, equipment deficiencies, and safety concerns.
- Perform general building maintenance including carpentry, painting, drywall repair, door and hardware repair, and minor plumbing and electrical work.
- Install, maintain, and repair building fixtures, furnishings, mechanical equipment, and facility components.
- Operate and maintain tools, shop equipment, maintenance vehicles, and department machinery.
- Coordinate and lead snow and ice removal operations for campus sidewalks, entrances, parking areas, and roadways.
- Supervise, direct, and train seasonal staff, student workers, and contractors during snow removal operations.
- Operate and maintain snow removal equipment including plows, snow blowers, spreaders, skid steers, and utility vehicles.
- Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on snow removal and grounds equipment to ensure operational readiness.
- Monitor weather conditions, assist with snow response planning, and participate in emergency and after-hours weather events.
- Maintain maintenance records, equipment service logs, and inventories of parts, tools, and seasonal supplies.
- Adhere to University safety policies, OSHA standards, departmental procedures, and applicable building codes.

Other Responsibilities (10%)
- Participate in departmental meetings, training, and professional development opportunities.
- Support emergency response, weather-related operations, and special campus events.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the Director of Facilities Management.

Job Qualifications :

Minimum Education and Experience
- Associate degree, trade certification, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in facilities maintenance, building operations, mechanical maintenance, equipment repair, construction, or a related field.
- Experience operating and maintaining snow removal equipment, grounds equipment, or light-duty fleet vehicles preferred.
- Experience leading work crews, seasonal employees, or contractors preferred.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required.
- Ability to become boiler certified.
Preferred Qualifications
- HVAC, Building Maintenance, Mechanical Maintenance, or related trade certification.
- Small engine or equipment maintenance certification preferred.
- Experience working in higher education, healthcare, commercial, or institutional facilities.
- Locksmith knowledge or experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Technical Knowledge
- Ability to respond to emergency maintenance and snow removal situations outside normal business hours.
- Working knowledge of commercial building maintenance, mechanical systems, and preventative maintenance practices.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Knowledge of pumps, motors, drives, bearings, gearboxes, fans, and related mechanical equipment.
- Basic understanding of HVAC systems and mechanical room equipment.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing systems, fixtures, and repair methods.
- Basic knowledge of electrical systems, controls, lighting systems, and low-voltage applications.
- Ability to diagnose operational problems and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot snow removal equipment and grounds maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance principles and equipment service procedures.
- Ability to read equipment manuals, technical diagrams, and maintenance instructions.
- Experience using hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and diagnostic tools.
- Ability to provide direction and oversight to seasonal snow removal crews.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Dedication to providing excellent customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Working Conditions and Frequency:
 
- Working environment involves work in an urban, Christ-centered university.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform physically demanding maintenance work.
- Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and elevated work platforms.
- Ability to work in mechanical rooms, confined spaces, rooftops, and construction areas.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and snow removal equipment.
- Ability to perform repetitive hand, wrist, and arm movements.
