NASW Assurance Services, Inc. (ASI)

Company : NASW Assurance Services, Inc. (ASI)

Location : Washington, DC (Hybrid – 3 Days In Office)

Salary : $130,000 – $165,000

Reports To : Chief Executive Officer

Dotted-Line : CFO, National Association of Social Workers

Employment : Full-time, Exempt

ABOUT ASI

ASI is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and operates with a small staff of ~14 people. The majority of operations are outsourced, so this role carries significant scope and visibility. You'll manage real lines of business — Group Life & Health Insurance, Professional Liability, a Captive Insurance Company, and more — without the bureaucracy of a large corporate environment. We're a values-driven team. We take our work seriously, support each other, and believe in doing the right thing — for our members, our profession, and each other.

WHERE YOU'LL WORK

Our DC office is centrally located and easily accessible by Metro, bus, and major commuter routes — no car required. This is a hybrid role with approximately 3 days in the office per week.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

This role is more than a title upgrade. NASW Assurance Services, Inc. (ASI) is looking for a hands-on finance leader who wants to own something — not just manage it. As our Director of Finance & Controller, you'll be the financial backbone of two mission-driven organizations that serve America's social work profession. You'll work closely with the CEO and a lean, collaborative team where your work actually moves the needle. If you're a sharp accounting professional ready to modernize a financial infrastructure, present to a Board, and still roll up your sleeves in QuickBooks — this one's worth a closer look.

- Full-cycle accounting: general ledger, AP/AR, reconciliations, journal entries, and cash management in QuickBooks and Bill.com

- Monthly and year-end close, financial statements, and variance analysis

- Budget development, forecasting, and financial modeling

- Board and executive reporting — you'll own the financials that leadership and the Board of Directors rely on

- Audit, tax, and regulatory coordination with external partners

- Banking, treasury, and investment account management

- Process improvement and financial systems ownership — real runway to modernize and build

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

- 5+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience

- Strong GAAP knowledge and financial statement expertise

- Comfort being both the analyst and the one processing the transaction

- Clear, confident communication with non-finance stakeholders

- Preferred (but not required to apply)

- CPA or active progress toward certification

- Experience in insurance, financial services, or regulated environments

- Background in nonprofit, association, or multi-entity settings

- Familiarity with QuickBooks, Bill.com, or similar tools

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The successful candidate will be an ambitious accounting and finance professional who has developed a strong accounting foundation and is ready to take broader ownership of a financial function.

The ideal candidate:

- Enjoys building and improving processes.

- Is comfortable in a hands-on environment.

- Can move between detailed accounting work and higher-level financial analysis.

- Wants exposure to executive leadership and Boards of Directors.

- Approaches problems with curiosity and sound judgment.

- Sees technology and automation as tools for improving finance.

- Wants to help build rather than simply maintain an existing finance function.

- Is interested in expanding their responsibilities as the organization grows.

GROWTH OPPORTUNITY

Initially, the Director of Finance & Controller will be highly involved in daily accounting operations while establishing strong financial processes, controls, and reporting capabilities.

As the organizations grow and potentially add finance staff, the role is expected to increasingly focus on:

- Financial planning and analysis.

- Forecasting.

- Product and program profitability.

- Strategic financial planning.

- Treasury and capital management.

- Executive decision support.

- Board financial strategy.

- Broader finance leadership.

- For the right individual, this position provides the opportunity to build a finance function and develop into a more senior financial leadership role.

COMPENSATION

The anticipated base salary range is $130,000 to $165,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, technical expertise, and relevant industry background.

The position is also expected to include a competitive benefits package and opportunities for increasing responsibility and career advancement.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY & INCLUSION

ASI is committed to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive team. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds and will provide reasonable accommodations throughout the hiring process. ASI does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, national origin, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, or any other protected category.
