JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Summary

The Senior EHS Engineer is responsible for leading the development and implementation of advanced risk management processes across manufacturing, engineering, R&D, logistics, and field service operations. This position serves as the technical expert for hazard identification, risk assessment, machine safety, electrical safety, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and integration of safety requirements into operational procedures.

The role will partner closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Product Engineering, Field Service, RD&E, and Operations leadership to ensure hazards are identified and controlled throughout the equipment lifecycle. The position requires the ability to understand and analyze complex equipment build instructions, maintenance procedures, service documentation, and operating practices to develop practical and effective risk controls.

This position is a critical component of the company's strategy to transition from a compliance-focused EHS program to a proactive operational risk management system.

Primary Responsibilities

Risk Assessment Leadership

- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of enterprise risk assessment programs.
- Conduct and facilitate risk assessments across manufacturing, logistics, engineering, demonstration, and field service operations.
- Maintain and expand risk assessment coverage for existing work areas and newly identified operational activities.
- Prioritize risk reduction efforts based on severity, frequency, and exposure.
- Develop standardized risk assessment methodologies and tools.

Procedure-Based Hazard Analysis

- Review and analyze manufacturing instructions, maintenance procedures, installation procedures, and service documentation.
- Identify hazards and required controls associated with specific tasks and equipment.
- Integrate risk assessment findings directly into operating procedures and work instructions.
- Ensure procedures clearly communicate hazard controls, safe work practices, PPE requirements, and energy control requirements.
- Support integration of risk assessment information into operational systems and digital work platforms.

Technical Safety Programs

Provide technical leadership for:

- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
- Electrical Safety
- Machine Guarding
- Material Handling
- Chemical Safety
- Equipment Commissioning and Startup Safety
- Contractor Safety
- Preventive Maintenance Safety Programs

Continuous Improvement

- Develop EHS performance metrics related to risk reduction activities.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency through risk management.
- Benchmark industry best practices and emerging technologies.
- Lead and support strategic EHS improvement projects.

Required Qualifications

Education

- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Technology, or related technical discipline.

Experience

- 7+ years of EHS experience in manufacturing, engineering, industrial equipment, semiconductor, automation, machinery, or similarly complex technical environments.
- Experience conducting formal risk assessments and hazard analyses.
- Experience supporting machinery, manufacturing operations, technical service organizations, or engineering functions.
- Experience with safety program development and implementation.

Technical Aptitude

Ability to:

- Read and interpret technical drawings
- Understand mechanical systems
- Review electrical schematics
- Analyze equipment build instructions
- Review maintenance procedures
- Understand equipment installation and service processes
- Work effectively with engineering and technical teams

Preferred Qualifications

- Professional Engineer (PE) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE)
- Experience supporting semiconductor manufacturing or capital equipment industries
- Experience with Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), or similar risk methodologies

U.S. BASE SALARY RANGE

$86,906.80 - $130,360.20

This base salary range reflects the typical compensation for this role across U.S. locations.

Our salary ranges are determined by role and level; individual pay is determined based on

multiple factors, including job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, work

location, and internal equity. The range provides the opportunity for growth and progression as

you develop within the role.

Base pay is one part of our U.S. total compensation package which includes eligibility in the

Axcelis Team Incentive bonus plan, and comprehensive benefits package (for regular

employees working 20+ hours a week).
