Histotechnologist (Research Animal Resources)

We are seeking a  Histotechnologist  who will perform various routine and laboratory tests in accordance with established standards and procedures. The RAR Histotechnologist performs technical procedures on clinical and research pathology specimens, working closely with faculty and postdocs and other team members. This role includes maintaining laboratory safety procedures through proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials/biomedical waste, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, as well as record keeping and electronic data entry, billing for services, and ordering supplies.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

- Perform day-to-day technical procedures on clinical and research specimens.
- Prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist or investigator.
- Perform grossing/dissection of small specimens using skills and knowledge of animal and human anatomy and morphology
- Accession and bill projects.
- Maintain laboratory equipment.
- Program tissue processors and slide stainer.
- Perform routine histology on human and animal specimens, special stain techniques; embed specimens; prepare various staining solutions; decalcification and staining of bone specimens, operating automated slide and cassette printer, load tissue processors, and automated slide cover slipper. Handle wet tissue and frozen tissue sectioning.
- Perform quality assurance procedures evaluating sections as they are being sectioned and assessing stain and tissue quality after staining. Report discrepancies and initiate remediation per standard operating procedure.
- Maintain and troubleshoot equipment, do routine repairs or notify service personnel when more complex problems occur.
- Perform related general duties changing solutions on slide stainer and tissue processors.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records.
- Provide accurate information on work completed to ensure proper billing.
- Other duties as assigned.

Technical Qualifications & Specialized Certifications

- Kn owledge of normal human and animal tissue morphology.
- Able to perform paraffin as well as frozen sectioning, H&E staining, and recognize discrepancies and take corrective action.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to work under environmental conditions that could require the use of safety equipment.
- Specialty Occupational Health requirements up to date and complete.

Minimum Qualifications

- Associate's Degree in Allied Health, Biology, Chemistry, or related program with at least 12 semester hours credits achieved in Biology and/or Chemistry.
- One year of laboratory experience including some histology experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

- Meet criteria to sit for HT (ASCP) certification is preferred.
