About this role

The Records Clerk Messenger supports the centralized records management program by handling active and inactive paper records. This includes tracking records, completing annual inventories, creating file plans, and managing records throughout their full life cycle. The role is responsible for delivering and retrieving records from on‑site storage areas and an off‑site warehouse facility. The Records Clerk Messenger also drives to deliver records to requestors and file units as needed.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

- Must be able to obtain/maintain required government clearance to enter government facilities and access government data/systems/files.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record, REAL ID.
- Must maintain an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to use a scanner and use electronic document management tools.
- Ability to work independently.
- Detail oriented.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

- Drives the RMU van to multiple Civil Division offices and federal facilities across the D.C. metro area, completing scheduled deliveries and pickups.
- Delivers and retrieves case files, supplies, and equipment; obtains required recipient signatures and follows supervisor‑directed pickup instructions.
- Plans efficient daily routes and maintains accurate delivery and pickup logs.
- Creates, maintains, organizes, labels, and retires case files in both physical and electronic formats; updates tracking systems such as CIMS and AMMS.
- Locates, retrieves, and prepares files for requestors using research tools and finding aids.
- Performs file maintenance, including removing duplicates, replacing folders, and ensuring proper file organization.
- Prepares files for transfer or retirement by boxing, labeling, listing, and processing them for federal records centers.
- Conducts routine shelf‑reading and quality control checks to ensure accurate file maintenance.
- Provides general records clerk support and responds to customer needs professionally when not performing deliveries.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of one (1) year of college or relevant experience (e.g., paralegal training) and/or training, or equivalent combination of education/experience. Two (2) years of experience in records management or filing functions in a legal office environment preferred.
