Master Gardener/Clubhouse Landscape Specialist

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Master Gardener / Clubhouse Landscape Specialist to oversee the care, appearance, and health of the landscaped areas surrounding our golf course clubhouse.

This position is responsible for maintaining a consistently attractive, healthy, and well-manicured landscape that reflects the standards and image of the club. The ideal candidate has strong horticultural knowledge, excellent attention to detail, takes pride in their work, and is comfortable working independently to identify and address the needs of the landscape.

This is a hands-on horticultural position with responsibility for ornamental plants, trees, shrubs, flower beds, irrigation, seasonal plantings, and general landscape presentation.

Key Responsibilities
Plant & Landscape Care

- Maintain flower beds, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, groundcover, and other landscaped areas around the clubhouse.

- Perform regular planting, transplanting, pruning, trimming, deadheading, weeding, mulching, and edging.

- Select and install seasonal flowers and plants appropriate for the local climate and growing conditions.

- Monitor plant health and identify signs of disease, insects, nutrient deficiencies, or environmental stress.

- Recommend and implement appropriate treatments to maintain healthy and attractive plant material.

- Maintain a clean, orderly, and professionally manicured appearance throughout the clubhouse landscape.

Irrigation & Water Management

- Monitor irrigation systems serving clubhouse landscaping.

- Identify and address basic irrigation problems, including broken heads, clogged lines, leaks, improper coverage, and watering schedules.

- Adjust watering practices based on seasonal conditions, plant requirements, and weather.

- Coordinate with management or irrigation specialists when repairs exceed routine maintenance.

Landscape Planning & Improvement

- Develop recommendations for improving the appearance, sustainability, and health of clubhouse landscaping.

- Assist with selecting appropriate plants, trees, shrubs, flowers, and other landscape materials.

- Plan seasonal color displays and replacement plantings.

- Identify areas requiring renovation, replacement, or additional landscape materials.

- Help maintain an attractive landscape throughout the changing seasons.

Grounds Maintenance

- Keep landscaped areas free of weeds, litter, debris, and unwanted growth.

- Apply mulch, compost, soil amendments, and fertilizers as appropriate.

- Maintain landscape tools and equipment in good working condition.

- Follow proper safety procedures when using hand tools, power equipment, fertilizers, herbicides, and other landscape products.

- Maintain organized storage of gardening supplies and equipment.

Club Standards & Guest Experience

- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor while working in areas visible to members and guests.

- Work carefully around clubhouse facilities, walkways, patios, entrances, and other high-traffic areas.

- Respond promptly to landscape issues that could affect the appearance or safety of the property.

- Take ownership of the overall appearance and condition of the clubhouse landscape.

Qualifications

- Demonstrated experience in professional gardening, horticulture, landscaping, or grounds maintenance.

- Master Gardener certification or equivalent horticultural education/experience preferred.

- Strong knowledge of ornamental plants, trees, shrubs, flowers, soil, pruning, fertilization, irrigation, and plant health.

- Ability to identify common plant diseases, pests, and horticultural problems.

- Ability to work independently and prioritize daily and seasonal landscape needs.

- Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining a high-quality property.

- Ability to safely operate common gardening and landscape equipment.

- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

- Valid driver's license preferred.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who sees the difference between simply maintaining a landscape and cultivating a beautiful one. They should be knowledgeable enough to recognize what plants need before problems become apparent, take initiative without requiring constant supervision, and have a strong eye for detail and presentation.
Experience working on a golf course, country club, resort, botanical garden, estate, or other professionally maintained property is a plus.

Compensation
$25–$28 per hour, commensurate with experience, horticultural knowledge, certifications, and level of responsibility.

Physical Requirements
This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, carrying, digging, pruning, and other physical gardening activities. The employee must be able to safely perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
