Summary

The Operations Maintenance Technician works with substantial latitude to support high-level manufacturing equipment and critical facility infrastructure. Working with minimal direction, this role requires independent judgment, discretionary problem-solving, and strong technical initiative. Incumbents lead preventive and corrective maintenance (PM/DM) efforts across advanced plant equipment—including complex multi-axis CNC machine tools, automated pallet systems, and general production machinery. The position troubleshoots electromechanical, servo, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems, manages technical data, and coordinates with external contractors and engineering teams to maximize uptime, geometric precision, and facility reliability.

Detailed Description

Key Responsibilities
• CNC & Production Machinery Support: Perform complex troubleshooting, failure analysis, drive/servo tuning, mechanical alignment, and repair on plant CNC machine tools, including:
o 5-Axis & Multi-Axis Machining Centers: DMG MORI 5-Axis machining centers and DMG MORI DMC systems integrated with Fastems flexible manufacturing automation.
o Horizontal & Vertical Machining Centers: Niigata SPN 50, Niigata SPN 40, Niigata 501, and Fanuc RoboDrills.
o Turning Centers / Lathes: Haas Lathes and Hitachi Seiki Lathes.
• Automation & Cell Systems Maintenance: Maintain and repair automated material/pallet handling systems (e.g., Fastems FMS automation) attached to CNC cell configurations to ensure uninterrupted production cycles.
• Engineering & Prototype Support: Perform complex testing, debug, circuit modifications, and design verification on production machinery and custom tooling using schematics, hydraulic/pneumatic prints, and engineering drawings.
• Facilities & Equipment Maintenance: Coordinate and support the installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of building operating systems, manufacturing layouts, and facility infrastructure.
• Technical Leadership & Escalation: Function as a senior technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for equipment failure root-cause analysis, providing technical guidance, training, and task leadership to junior maintenance personnel.
• Vendor & Project Coordination: Interface with OEM service engineers (DMG MORI, Niigata, Haas, Fanuc, Fastems, etc.), suppliers, contractors, and engineering leads to coordinate overhauls, machine rebuilds, geometric alignment checks, and facility renovations.
• Quality & Compliance: Maintain compliance with safety standards, environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001), and regulatory requirements. Accurately document test data, machine maintenance logs, work orders, and failure reports.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

CNC Machine Expertise: In-depth knowledge of CNC mechanical assemblies, ball screws, linear guides, high-speed spindles, tool changers, way covers, rotary tables, and chip conveyor systems.
Machine-Specific Systems Familiarity: Hands-on maintenance experience with DMG MORI 5-Axis machines, DMG MORI DMC / Fastems FMS automation cells, Niigata horizontal machining centers (SPN 50 / SPN 40 / 501), Fanuc RoboDrills, Haas Lathes, and Hitachi Seiki Lathes.
Control Systems & Electronics: Proficiency troubleshooting CNC controls and drive architectures (Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, or Mitsubishi), including AC/DC servo systems, encoder feedback loops, PLC ladder logic, and spindle drives.
Precision Measurement & Calibration: Ability to verify machine geometry and alignment using indicators, laser alignment tools, or ballbar testing systems.
Diagnostic & Technical Abilities: Exceptional root-cause failure analysis skills using electrical schematics, ladder diagrams, hydraulic/pneumatic schematics, CAD drawings, and specialized diagnostic instruments.
Systems & Software: Proficiency in computer literacy (MS Office Suite) and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for preventive maintenance scheduling and work order execution.
Project & Team Leadership: Strong project management skills with the ability to lead tasks, interface with internal and external stakeholders, and maintain high productivity under tight timelines.
Equipment Operation: Ability to operate high-lift equipment, pallet jacks, and specialized facility/manufacturing machinery (with valid operator licenses or certifications where required).

Typical Qualifications

Experience: 4 to 6 years of relevant experience in industrial machinery maintenance, electro-mechanical repair, CNC machine tool maintenance, or facility support.

Preferred / Required Certifications

Academic: A.A.S. in Mechatronics, Industrial Maintenance, Automated Systems Technology, or equivalent combination of education and hands-on technical experience.
Trade / Specialty: Journeyman Electrician license OR Certified PLC/Automation Specialist.
OEM Training: Factory maintenance certification/training for Fanuc, Siemens, DMG MORI, Haas, or Fastems automation systems.
Industry Standards: NIMS Industrial Technology Maintenance OR CMRT (SMRP Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician).

Software & Technical Skills

CMMS Proficiency: Experience using enterprise or cloud CMMS platforms (e.g., SAP PM, Maximo, Fiix, MaintainX) for work order tracking, spare parts control, and PM scheduling.
Systems Expertise: Advanced troubleshooting of PLC ladder logic, servo motor replacement, ball screw replacement, hydraulic clamping systems, pneumatic valving, and CNC controller parameter management.

Physical Demands

- Duties of the position are performed in a manufacturing environment with frequent exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, operating machinery, temperature extremes, hazardous substances, etc.

- Duties of the position require periodic light physical effort and exertion including prolonged repetitive motions, sitting in confined workspaces, using tools and equipment, and moving and handling materials.

- Duties may require periodic heavy manual effort including lifting objects over 20 pounds.
