About this role
Job Summary and Responsibilities
Our Sleep Center is on a mission to mitigate the impact of sleep disorders through identifying, treating, and understanding the very conditions that affect sleep and everyday functions. Complex disorders like insomnia, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy do more than disrupt sleep—they’re closely linked to serious health outcomes, like an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cognitive issues, and liver and kidney problems.
The Polysomnographic Technologist (PSG/Sleep) performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing, detailed analysis, and essential therapeutic interventions. Operating under the general supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), Clinical Director (MD, PhD, DO), or Polysomnographic Trainee, this role delivers exceptional patient-centered care and accurate diagnostic results.
Daily responsibilities include gathering and analyzing comprehensive patient information, thoroughly reviewing medical histories, physical data, current medications, procedure requests, and study protocols, while completing and verifying all necessary clinical documentation. Clear communication is key when orienting patients to the sleep center, explaining procedures to create a supportive environment, and promptly addressing participant inquiries with appropriate information.
Technical duties involve preparing, calibrating, and fine-tuning diagnostic equipment to ensure optimal functionality, as well as expertly applying electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards. Routine physiologic calibrations are conducted to verify signal integrity, alongside custom Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) mask fittings tailored to individual patient comfort and needs.
Success in this position requires specialized knowledge and skills to recognize and deliver age-appropriate assessment, treatment, and education for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Strict adherence to procedural protocols applies across specialized studies—such as Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests (MWT), parasomnia evaluations, and PAP or oxygen titrations—while standard "lights out" procedures establish baseline parameters including body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory rate, and heart rate.
Dynamic acquisition of polysomnographic data occurs alongside continuous monitoring of live tracings, making immediate adjustments to guarantee artifact-free signals. Operational readiness is maintained through ongoing equipment care, routine maintenance, and systematic inventory evaluations.
Thorough clinical documentation of observations, sleep stages, procedure modifications, and significant events facilitates accurate scoring and diagnostic interpretation. Finally, timely interventions—including continuous or bi-level positive airway pressure and oxygen administration—are executed to safeguard patient well-being and fulfill therapeutic goals
