Position Purpose

The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in overseeing daily department operations, ensuring the highest standards of product quality, freshness, merchandising, customer service, and food safety. This position assists in leading associates, managing inventory, driving department sales, controlling shrink, and maintaining an outstanding shopping experience for customers.

Key Responsibilities

Department Operations

- Assist in managing the daily operations of the Produce Department.
- Ensure produce displays are fully stocked, visually appealing, and maintained according to company merchandising standards.
- Monitor product quality, freshness, rotation, and inventory levels.
- Assist with ordering, receiving, and inventory control functions.
- Help coordinate daily department priorities to ensure operational efficiency.

Leadership & Team Development

- Provide leadership, coaching, and support to produce associates.
- Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and training new team members.
- Foster a positive work environment focused on customer service, teamwork, and accountability.
- Monitor associate performance and provide constructive feedback.
- Serve as department leader in the absence of the Produce Manager.

Customer Service

- Deliver exceptional customer service and ensure customer needs are met promptly.
- Assist customers with product selection, preparation questions, and special requests.
- Resolve customer concerns professionally and effectively.
- Promote a customer-first culture throughout the department.
- Ensure associates maintain high service standards and product knowledge.

Merchandising & Product Quality

- Maintain attractive displays that drive sales and enhance the customer experience.
- Ensure proper product rotation and freshness standards are consistently followed.
- Support the execution of promotional programs, seasonal displays, and sales initiatives.
- Verify pricing accuracy and signage compliance throughout the department.
- Continuously monitor department conditions and take corrective action when necessary.

Inventory & Shrink Management

- Assist with inventory management and replenishment activities.
- Monitor product movement and maintain appropriate ordering levels.
- Support shrink reduction efforts through effective rotation, handling, and inventory controls.
- Identify potential inventory concerns and implement corrective actions.
- Assist with inventory counts and department audits.

Food Safety & Compliance

- Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of produce products.
- Promote workplace safety and proper equipment operation.
- Support audit preparation and corrective action plans as needed.

Financial Performance

- Support achievement of department sales, profit, labor, and shrink goals.
- Monitor labor productivity and assist with scheduling needs.
- Help identify opportunities to increase sales and operational efficiency.
- Support department business plans and performance improvement initiatives.
- Assist with expense control and profitability objectives.
