Project Engineer In Training

As a Project Engineer (EIT) , you will join a high-performing technical team dedicated to developing, maintaining, and deploying advanced transportation forecasting models. In this role, you will leverage urban planning, traffic engineering, and data science principles to power corporate growth, regional planning, and traffic operations.

You will combine cutting-edge modeling techniques and statistical estimation to build and operate large-scale simulation models. Success in this role relies on applying core transportation principles, analyzing complex spatial data, and calibrating models to TAC and FHWA guidelines—delivering data-driven insights that shape long-term strategic initiatives like the City Plan.

What will you do?

- Assist the team to develop, maintain, and execute transportation models across all scales (microsimulation, mesoscopic/Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA), and macroscopic/travel demand)
- Integrate transportation planning, engineering, and statistical techniques to optimize modeling algorithms and platforms
- Coordinate data exchange to seamlessly integrate travel demand and DTA models
- Research and implement advanced modeling techniques, toolsets, and emerging technologies (e.g., adaptive traffic signals, AVs, and ITS)
- Configure, run, and evaluate custom model scenarios based on specific land use and network input assumptions
- Perform scenario analysis for long range transportation planning, travel demand management initiatives, community traffic management plans and construction detour/closure impact assessments
- Extract key performance indicators (KPIs), compile and interpret modeling results to internal and external clients
- Author comprehensive technical reports for review and authentication by accountable engineers
- Build interactive visual dashboards for management, Community Partners, and the public
- Collaborate with internal and external subject matter experts to support evidence-based decision-making
Qualifications

- Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering with coursework in Traffic Engineering, Transportation Planning, and/or Urban Planning
- Must be an Engineer in Training (EIT) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment

Skills required for success:

- Transportation Modeling & Software: Skilled in applying softwares (e.g., Openpaths (EMME, Dynameq), Aimsun, TransCAD, VISUM, VISSIM, Synchro) related to travel demand, microsimulation , and traffic signal optimization models within a regional planning context
- Engineering & Traffic Analysis: Strong grasp of transportation engineering principles, traffic fundamentals, capacity/level-of-service analysis, and cost-benefit evaluations
- Data Processing & Analytics: Proficient in statistical analysis, data processing, and visualization using tools like Python, R, SQL, ArcGIS or Power BI
- Professional & Execution Skills : Effective team player and communicator with strong written skills, analytical ability, project ownership, and time management skills

Work Environment:

- This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
- This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Conditions of employment:

- Up to: 1 permanent full-time position
- Hours of work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday
- Salary: $35.60 - $43.271 (Hourly); $74,332.80 - $90,349.85 (Annually)
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
- Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance
