At Froedtert ThedaCare Health, we are seeking an accomplished legal executive to serve as our Associate Vice President, Health Law. This is a unique opportunity to combine sophisticated healthcare legal practice, executive leadership, and mission-driven impact within one of the Midwest's leading nonprofit integrated health systems. This role will help shape the legal strategy supporting a complex, multi-entity healthcare organization dedicated to serving patients, providers, team members, and communities across Wisconsin.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Legal Affairs, the AVP, Health Law leads the Health Law pillar of the Office of General Counsel (OGC) and serves as a key member of the OGC leadership team. The AVP provides strategic legal counsel on healthcare regulatory, clinical, operational, compliance, physician, and business matters while partnering closely with executive leaders, boards, committees, operational teams, physicians, and key stakeholders to advance organizational priorities.

As a trusted advisor to senior leadership, this role offers significant visibility and influence in system decision-making, organizational growth, and business transformation initiatives. The AVP plays an integral role in supporting strategic affiliations, acquisitions, partnerships, care delivery innovation, compliance initiatives, governance matters, and other efforts that shape the future direction of Froedtert ThedaCare Health.

The AVP is responsible for leading a team of attorneys, legal professionals, and policy management resources while driving excellence in healthcare legal services, policy governance, operational effectiveness, and organizational performance. This leader will help strengthen a system legal function that supports a large, integrated nonprofit health system spanning multiple hospitals, physician organizations, ambulatory services, affiliated entities, and care delivery settings throughout Wisconsin.

What You'll Do

As Associate Vice President, Health Law, you will:

- Lead the Health Law function across the health system, providing practical, business-focused legal guidance on healthcare regulatory, clinical, operational, compliance, and strategic initiatives.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to executive, physician, operational, and clinical leaders on healthcare laws, regulations, accreditation standards, reimbursement matters, regulatory compliance obligations, and emerging legal risks.
- Advise on physician and provider arrangements, clinical affiliations, care delivery models, professional services agreements, operational initiatives, and healthcare regulatory requirements.
- Support strategic affiliations, acquisitions, partnerships, clinical integration efforts, and organizational growth initiatives by identifying legal risks and developing practical solutions that support organizational objectives.
- Oversee attorney-client privileged investigations, legal analyses, internal reviews, and responses involving healthcare operational, clinical, compliance, and regulatory matters.
- Direct and manage outside counsel engaged for specialized healthcare regulatory, transactional, litigation, compliance, and other legal matters.
- Provide executive leadership for the organization's policy management program, ensuring strong policy governance, administration, integration, and continuous improvement across the health system.
- Oversee system-wide policy governance and management processes, ensuring policies are developed, reviewed, approved, maintained, communicated, and administered in accordance with organizational standards and regulatory requirements.
- Establish and monitor policy management metrics, reporting, controls, and governance structures that promote accountability, transparency, consistency, and compliance.
- Lead initiatives to improve efficiency, scalability, transparency, and effectiveness within the Office of General Counsel through process improvement, operational innovation, and service delivery excellence.
- Lead and develop a high-performing team of attorneys, paralegals, contract professionals, operations leaders, and legal support staff.
- Build strong partnerships with executive leadership, compliance, finance, human resources, information technology, physician leadership, and operational stakeholders to support organizational objectives and effective governance.
- Foster a collaborative, service-oriented culture focused on excellence, accountability, innovation, continuous improvement, and exceptional client service.

Qualifications

Required

- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law and in good standing in Wisconsin, or eligible for admission upon hire.
- Minimum eight (8) to ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in health law, healthcare regulatory law, healthcare operations, or related healthcare legal practice areas.
- Minimum five (5) years of leadership experience managing attorneys, legal professionals, and/or teams.
- Significant experience advising healthcare organizations on regulatory, operational, clinical, compliance, and transactional legal matters.
- Demonstrated experience leading attorneys and legal professionals within a complex healthcare organization.
- Demonstrated success mentoring legal professionals, advising senior executives, physician leaders, and boards, and leading complex organizational initiatives.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to balance legal risk, regulatory obligations, operational priorities, and organizational goals.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, relationship-building, and executive leadership skills.

Candidates will be required to reside and work within Froedtert ThedaCare Health's Wisconsin expansive service area.

Preferred

- Experience supporting integrated health systems, healthcare organizations, academic medical centers, physician enterprises, or similarly complex healthcare organizations.
- Extensive knowledge of healthcare regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, reimbursement considerations, provider arrangements, and clinical operations.
- Experience supporting strategic healthcare transactions, affiliations, acquisitions, partnerships, and clinical integration initiatives.
- Experience leading policy governance and integrations, compliance-related initiatives, and enterprise-wide operational improvement efforts.
- Proven ability to lead change, improve organizational performance, and develop high-performing teams.
- Demonstrated success implementing legal operations, process improvement, technology, governance, and service delivery innovations.
