Senior Technical Program Manager, AGI Safety and Alignment, DeepMind

As a Technical Program Manager at Google, you lead complex, multi-disciplinary engineering projects using your engineering expertise. You plan requirements with internal customers and usher projects through the entire project lifecycle. This includes managing project schedules, identifying risks and clearly communicating them to project stakeholders. You're equally at home explaining your team's analyses and recommendations to executives as you are discussing the technical trade-offs in product development with engineers.

Using your extensive technical and leadership expertise, you manage projects of various size and scope, identifying future opportunities, improving processes and driving the technical directions of your programs.

The Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Safety and Alignment Team is the main group at DeepMind working directly on technical approaches to existential risk from AI systems.

As a Senior Technical Program Manager for AGI Safety on the Safety and Behavior Technical Program Manager (TPgM) Team, you will lead the operational design and technical execution safeguarding Gemini against extreme and frontier risks.

In this role, you will bridge the gap between alignment research and production partnering with research teams to translate cutting-edge safety theories into practical control mechanisms. You will drive end-to-end delivery across the model lifecycle, scaling training and evaluation infrastructure while implementing robust monitoring frameworks to detect, measure, and mitigate critical risks in advanced systems

US: $256000 - $278000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Minimum qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in a technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

- 8 years of experience in program or project management.

Preferred qualifications:

- Understanding of threat models, risks, and mitigations for AGI safety and alignment, with the ability to connect day-to-day project priorities to broader organizational safety goals.

- Understanding of large language models and AI agents, including knowledge of model behavior, control, evaluation, and other alignment-related topics in machine learning research and applied practice.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly and persuasively to audiences, including executive leadership and cross-functional partners.

- Demonstrated success driving fast-paced program execution, consistently landing high-quality deliverables on ambitious timelines in ambiguous, rapidly evolving research environments.

- Dive into technical details, evaluating safety losses and metrics to confirm they accurately measure the target problems, and develop solutions where they fall short.

- Manage the full portfolio. Oversee a program spanning near-term model development through long-term research in AGI Safety, Alignment, and Control.

- Drive organizational efficiency. Streamline execution, implement tooling improvements, and proactively resolve blockers for research and engineering teams while partnering with technical leads on strategies that support team growth and culture.

- Coordinate across Gemini. Align groups (e.g., release, model behavior, training) on shared plans and timelines, building consensus and influencing outcomes without direct authority.

- Communicate upward. Manage high-visibility executive reviews, giving leadership clear, consistent visibility into program status and risk.
