Overview

The Senior / Principal Export Control Officer will be part of our Export Control Compliance team, providing specialist knowledge, guidance and advice to the UK business on export control regulations and matters relating to strategic and operational requirements.

As our business continues to develop its global activities, customer base and partnerships, effective export control and sanctions compliance is increasingly important. In this role, you’ll support the business in managing its internal and external risk profile, applying appropriate compliance controls and enabling teams to meet their objectives in a compliant manner.

You’ll monitor developments in export control regulations across the countries in which we operate, with particular focus on nuclear and military-related export controls, and work closely with colleagues across the business to understand and manage their impact.

You’ll be part of the wider Legal team, reporting to the Head of Export Control and working across all areas of the UK business. While the role has no direct reports, you’ll use your expertise to guide, support and influence others in meeting our compliance requirements.

Your Role

- As a Senior / Principal Export Control Officer, you’ll work collaboratively across the business, providing practical guidance and specialist support on export control and sanctions requirements.
- Monitor and keep up to date with UK and international export control regulations, particularly those relating to nuclear and military activities, and help the business understand their impact.
- Provide specialist advice and guidance on export control and sanctions matters, supporting colleagues in meeting strategic and operational requirements.
- Support the implementation and continuous improvement of our export control and sanctions compliance strategy, policies, processes and controls, helping to reduce business risk.
- Manage and support export control authorisations, including applications, associated briefs and processes to ensure compliance with authorisation conditions.
- Support key compliance activities, including denied-party screening, technology segregation and access permissions relating to US regulatory obligations.
- Work collaboratively with Integrated Project Teams and stakeholders across functions and locations to identify and address export control requirements.
- Support training and communications that build understanding and awareness of export control and sanctions requirements across the organisation.
- Help identify, resolve and prevent non-conformances, supporting appropriate corrective actions, improvements and disclosures where required.
- Engage with external regulators and third parties when needed, and contribute to or lead specialist technical areas, projects or Communities of Practice.

About You

- You’ll bring practical export control experience alongside the ability to build trusted relationships, communicate clearly and help colleagues navigate complex regulatory requirements.
- Practical experience and understanding of UK export control regulations and their operational application.
- Knowledge of US export control regulations and an understanding of their potential impact on business activities.
- Experience translating regulatory requirements into effective business processes, controls, training and improvements that support compliant ways of working.
- Experience supporting export control and sanctions activities, including export authorisations, denied-party screening and technology segregation.
- An understanding of managing non-compliance, including containment, cause and effect, corrective actions, controls and potential disclosure requirements.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to build collaborative relationships and explain complex regulatory requirements clearly to different audiences.
- Export control and sanctions training, such as ECJU training, or equivalent knowledge of UK and US export control regulations.
- Knowledge or experience in compliance, business controls and process improvement, risk management, non-compliance management or nuclear export control regulations would be beneficial.
- Most importantly, you’ll bring a collaborative and considered approach, using your technical knowledge, judgement and communication skills to help the business understand its obligations, manage risk and achieve its objectives in a compliant manner.

Security clearance

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary, it will be discussed with you at interview.
