Forage Lab Technician 1

JOB SUMMARY

Forage Lab Technicians in the sample receiving department are responsible for the accurate and efficient receipt, identification, preparation, and processing of forage and feed samples for laboratory analysis. Technicians classify samples according to sample type and requested analysis, prepare samples for distribution to the NIR and wet chemistry laboratories, and operate drying and grinding equipment in accordance with established laboratory procedures.

This position requires careful attention to detail, accuracy in sample handling and data recording, and the ability to consistently follow established testing, quality, and safety protocols. Technicians are also responsible for performing routine equipment maintenance and minor repairs, recording and entering sample information and moisture results, and maintaining the organization, storage, and disposal of samples. Successful technicians work effectively as part of a team, manage multiple tasks efficiently, and take responsibility for maintaining a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

45% Receives samples, classifies into sample types and analysis packages and prepares samples for distribution to the NIR and wet chemistry labs.

45% Operates drying and grinding equipment. This requires performing minor maintenance and repair work on equipment as needed.

5% Weighs and records moisture content of samples for results calculations. This requires computer work including connecting to the server, uploading test results, and running diagnostic programs.

5% Assistant with proper sample organization, storage and disposal.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a laboratory where there is exposure to chemicals and occasional exposure to dust and noise. The use of protective safety equipment is required.

MENTAL AND VISUAL DEMANDS

Close mental and visual attention required for controlling machines or processes at a rapid pace requiring close coordination and fine adjustment.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Constantly uses hands to finger, handle, or feel; talks or hears; and performs repetitive motions of the hands and/or wrists. Regularly sits, stands, walks, and reaches with arms and/or hands. Occasionally stoops, kneels, crouches, bends, and/or climbs.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of a general equivalency diploma (GED) required. One-year related laboratory technician experience.

Proficient computer skills, preferably using Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to use and/or experience using specialized laboratory software. Ability to use and/or experience using specialized laboratory software, such as Fox, Eudora, Winisi II, Turbo Chrom 4, Thermospec, FP 528 Ver 1.30.
