Job Summary and Responsibilities
As our Patient Registrar, you will provide crucial clerical support for our professional caregivers by expertly managing all functions related to patient registration.Every day you will meticulously handle registration, insurance verification, financial assistance information, and Point of Service Collections. You will also be responsible for accurate data input and record keeping, ensuring the integrity of patient information and financial transactions, while meticulously adhering to all credit card handling processes due to potential access to sensitive third-party credit card information.

Your ability to accurately manage complex administrative tasks will directly support seamless patient care and operational efficiency.
- Ensures a professional and responsive atmosphere by greeting patients, visitors, staff, and physicians promptly and courteously. Refers to each individual by name when appropriate. Screens individuals by requesting to see identification or visitor pass as necessary.
- Answers telephones using name, department, and title. Screens calls appropriately and refers callers to the correct staff member, patient, department, and /or resource in a timely manner. Makes every attempt to answer phones within three rings. Monitors time individuals may be on hold and reassures them their calls have not been forgotten. Takes clear, accurate, concise phone messages. Consistently available to answer phones. Seeks coverage when away from the work area. Understands the appropriate action to take in an emergency
- Relays messages in a timely manner, opens and delivers mail as appropriate
- Provides clerical support within the department. Asks questions in advance to gain clear understanding of the admitting/registration process and/or special projects. Completes assignments accurately and within the agreed time frame.
- Verifies insurance benefits on all assigned scheduled admissions and outpatient services, at least 3 days prior to date of service when possible, by using electronic verification systems or by contacting payers directly, to determine the level of insurance coverage and documents accurately in the system. Verifies insurance benefits on all urgent/emergent admits within 24 hours of service (or next business day) by using electronic systems or by contacting the payer. Verifies patient liabilities with payers during the preregistration, where possible. Determines patient financial responsibilities at time of service and collects copayments, deductibles, coinsurance or deposit amounts in accordance with system's cash control policies at the time of service.
- Assures timely and accurate entry of patient information into the computer system, including ensuring that all appropriate and necessary insurance information is verified and documented.
Job Requirements
Required
- High School Diploma/GED
- One year of hospital and/or emergency department patient registration experience
- Three years of patient registration experience in a non-acute setting may be substituted for the hospital and/or emergency department experience
- Completion of annual safety training
- Completes and maintains required unit specific training, such as training in the requirements providing "Advance Directive" information to patients upon admission and a thorough understanding of EMTALA regulations
- Participation in Admitting Department in-service training programs
Preferred
- Two years of hospital and/or emergency department patient registration experience
