Established in 1980 by the Airport Commission, SFO Museum’s mission is to delight, engage, and inspire a global audience with programming on a broad range of subjects; to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history of commercial aviation; and to enrich the public experience at San Francisco International Airport. The Museum has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1999 and retains the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. The Museum operates more than twenty-five sites throughout the Airport terminals, including fourteen galleries that exhibit a rotating schedule of art, history, photography, science, and cultural exhibitions. Job Description

3556 Museum Registrar

Under the direction and supervision of the Curator in Charge of Registration, the 3556 Museum Registrar performs a wide variety of professional registration duties in support of the Museum’s exhibition programs. This position works with all levels of Museum staff, coordinates with various departments within the Airport, and has regular communications with outside individuals and organizations. The position has no direct reports but may supervise department interns on an as-needed basis.

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

- Complete all exhibition management needs and meet all scheduled production due dates for approximately 5 to 10 assigned museum exhibitions annually.
- Oversee all exhibition loan processing for lenders to assigned exhibitions including cataloging and database entry; generation of object lists; loan agreement forms; receipt/release forms; insurance documents; correspondence; mailing; and all record keeping and related filing.
- Implement care and handling requirements for assigned exhibitions, including incoming packing and shipping; receiving; incoming condition reporting; temporary housing and storage; environmental monitoring; liaising with Conservation regarding handling and exhibition design; onsite packing and transportation; regular monitoring and inspection of galleries; deinstallation; outgoing condition reporting; outgoing packing and shipping .
- Maintain art storage and housing requirements for objects in assigned exhibitions including supply and use of approved housing materials, fixtures, and furnishings; tagging/marking; environmental control; seismic event damage protection; cleanliness; and security and loss prevention .
- Work closely with Registrar handling San Francisco Arts Commission duties with regards to Public Art maintenance at the Airport, including occasional overnight shifts 5 to 10 times a year .
- Work closely with Permanent Collections Department, Conservation, Exhibition Design, and Preparation Departments with regards to object handling and exhibition requirements.
- Coordinate work with other SFO Museum staff, representatives of other museums and outside art handling personnel.
- Maintain a variety of computerized and manual records and files regarding collections, loans and exhibitions .
- Accompany valuable objects of art in transit, oversee containerization, security, safety, movement and receipt of shipments .
- Supervise and train Registration Department interns, as assigned .

NOTE: This position requires overnight shifts 5 to 10 times a year for artwork maintenance inside Airport Terminals.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in art, art history, museum studies, arts administration or a closely related field and four years of verifiable museum registration experience;

OR

2. Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in art, art history, museum studies, arts administration or a closely related postgraduate program and two years of verifiable museum registration experience.

AND

3. Computer literacy in word processing, database management and a computerized registration system.

Desirable Qualification:

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred to hiring.

- Working knowledge of the principles of museum object care, documentation, and classification.
- Working knowledge of computer database systems, particularly Filemaker Pro and PDF management software, particularly Adobe Acrobat.
- Working knowledge of environmental controls, pest management, security, and risk management.
- Working knowledge of fine art shipping and handling requirements.
- Ability to plan, organize, implement and complete complex exhibition projects.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, assistants, supervisors, Museum and Airport staff, outside agencies, and the public.

Performance of essential duties require: considerable physical effort and dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs and body; excellent visual acuity; exposure to inclement weather and working conditions that are somewhat disagreeable in some locations; the use of ladders and aerial lift bucket; and lifting of 51 pounds of equipment.

Selection Procedures:
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation (Weight: 100%)

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be sent a Supplemental Questionnaire (Behavioral Consistency Questionnaire). The Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to measure the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position.  All candidates’ responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire are subject to verification. All relevant experience, education and/or training must be included in the responses in order to be reviewed in the rating process.

A passing score on the Supplemental Questionnaire must be achieved in order to be placed/ranked on the eligible list. Candidates will be placed on the eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

Note:  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through all of the steps in the selection procedure.

Eligible List/Score Report:  A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be six (6) months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

Additional Information

Background Investigation:
Positions with the San Francisco Airport Commission that require security clearance prior to employment may be required to have a thorough background investigation to determine the candidate’s suitability for employment.  The investigation includes a search into records held by the criminal justice system, credit reporting agencies, and the Dept. of Motor Vehicles, as well as contact with references, employers, and others who have knowledge of the candidate. Reasons for rejection based on this investigation may include, but not be limited to applicable convictions, repeated or serious violations of the law, use of controlled substances and alcohol, inability to work well with co-workers, inability to accept supervision, inability to follow rules and regulations, falsification of application materials, and/or other relevant factors.  Candidates may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening and must clear Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprinting.  The background investigation will also meet Transportation Security Administration requirements (TSA Section 1542.209).  Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination.  Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

Note:  Candidates will be prompted to submit a completed Personal History Statement (PHS), Authorization to Release Information/Waiver form and additional documents prior to the initiation of the Background Investigation. Once prompted candidates will have approximately 2 weeks to submit all the required documentation.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

Medical Examination:
Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine his/her ability to perform the essential functions of the job and/or the ability to meet the physical minimum requirements.

Certification:

The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three (3) pending Union's approval for expansion rule. The hiring department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures prior to making final hiring decisions.
