Welder's Helper

Department Summary
• Welder’s Helpers assist welders in the manufacturing of boats.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Assist in bending hulls when required. 
• Clean around the extrusion racks outside.
• Load the extrusion cart and carry extrusions inside from outside the building.
• Operate the shear and the chop saw.
• Keep the area clean at all times by disposing of garbage properly and sweeping regularly.
• Prepare the areas for the next workday.
• Use hand tools at a level beyond basic use.
• Organize and clean the welding tools table.
• Trim and fit components for boats.
• Prepare hoses, gunwales, ribs, and subassemblies for when the boat is on the jig.
• Drill holes for decks and box drains.
• Prepare the parts cart for the next boat, as the current boat is coming off the jig.
• Know the proper placement of parts on the cart and which section of the boat each part is used on. 
• Recognize when parts are missing.
• Work on multiple jigs at once throughout the day.
• Have a good understanding of the fundamentals of welding: heat, warping, bead profiles, etc.
• Cut hoses and gunwales accurately, drill holes in transoms and splashwells, roll ribs, and grind down all weld tacks.
• Check transom angle with digital levels.
• Identify the components of a boat and use the proper terminology for each component.
• Read the cut list and cut extrusions.
• Inspect the quality of all subassemblies prior to installation, identify defects or unsatisfactory quality, and take measures to prevent recurring poor quality.
• Place all extra non-welded parts into the boat after completion, and be able to account for all parts to ensure nothing is lost.
• Check the fitment of all lids prior to the boat exiting the jig and coordinate with the supervisor if the quality is unsatisfactory.

Required Skills
• Read a tape measure, understand fractions, simple math, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.
• Capable of using basic hand tools.
• Maintain connection and communication among other employees and management.
• Attention to detail is required to ensure high quality and safety.
• Lead by example; build a team that can rely on each other and can function if the supervisor is not there. Train each employee in your department to do your job if you are not there. Be competitive with the rest of the factory and do better than yesterday every day. Be a role model for others: have a positive attitude, keep your area and tools clean and organized, encourage your team.
