Minimum Qualifications:
- Six (6) years of professional experience in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field. A master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field from an accredited college or university can substitute for the years of experience required.
- At least two (2) years of professional archaeological field experience that includes survey, excavation, and mapping.
- Technical archaeological experience, including laboratory analysis, report writing, and data management.
- Knowledge of pertinent state and federal cultural resource legislation.
Preferences
- Proficiency with geophysical survey methods such as ground-penetrating radar
- Proficiency with RTK GPS
- Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro
- Willingness to travel frequently for site visits and meetings
- Experience leading cultural resource surveys
- Experience preparing professional quality reports on the results of archaeological projects
- Experience engaging in public outreach
- Familiarity with Acquisition and Restoration Council and DHR’S role in land management

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Public Lands Archaeology (PLA) Program of the Division of Historical Resources is responsible for assisting in the management of cultural resources on over 5-million acres of state-owned conservation land in Florida. PLA staff assess state-owned lands to identify areas of archaeological sensitivity, conduct surveys to locate and record sites, prepare nominations for the National Register of Historic Places, provide damage assessments on vandalized sites, oversee the archaeological research permit program, and provide management recommendations for site preservation and protection. In this position you will have the opportunity to travel frequently to State Parks, Forests, Wildlife Management Areas and other properties throughout the state. Specific duties of this position include:
- Conduct cultural resource surveys on Board of Trustees Lands
- Assist PLA supervisor with land management activities
- Assist with Archaeological Resource Management Training
- Assist with review and administration of 1A-32 Archaeological Research Permits
- Conduct research on state-owned sites or collections
- Increase visibility of the Bureau of Archaeological Research through outreach, partnerships, or publications
- Perform other work-related duties as required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of Florida’s archaeological cultures from all regions and time periods.
- Knowledge of historic preservation laws pertinent to state land management.
- Knowledge of archaeological field and laboratory methods.
- Ability to construct a research design and plan and lead archaeological projects.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to conduct field research in Florida’s various environmental settings.
- Ability to prepare professional reports on the results of archaeological projects in a timely manner.
- Ability to use mapping programs and technology (GPS & GIS).
