About this role
Position: Golang Developer
Job Family: Platform Engineer – DevOps Specialist
Location: Seattle, Washington – Remote
Employment Type: W2, Possible 3-Month Contract-to-Hire
Start Date: Immediate Availability
Overview
The Golang Developer will design, develop, enhance, and maintain Golang-based microservices supporting custom Point of Sale (POS) products and store operations. The role will also build and optimize GraphQL APIs that enable reliable interaction between enterprise applications, store applications, and supporting services.
This is a hands-on engineering role requiring someone who can contribute directly to working software rather than operating primarily as an architect or technical advisor. The developer will work across the development lifecycle, including understanding requirements, designing services and APIs, writing Golang code, troubleshooting defects, supporting testing, and helping move solutions toward production.
The developer will work collaboratively with Product, QA, DevOps, and Platform Engineering teams. Success requires both strong individual development capability and the ability to operate effectively within a cross-functional engineering environment where application functionality, APIs, infrastructure, testing, and deployment must work together.
Purpose: Build the backend services and APIs that support custom POS products and day-to-day store operations. The software delivered by this role will contribute directly to the technology used by enterprise and store applications to execute critical operating processes.
Growth: Deepen hands-on expertise in Golang, microservices, GraphQL, API engineering, and modern software delivery while working across Product, QA, DevOps, and Platform Engineering. The role provides the opportunity to solve real production engineering problems in a distributed application environment rather than working on isolated development assignments.
Motivators: This opportunity is best suited to an engineer who enjoys building software and seeing it used in an operating environment. The developer will have direct ownership for creating and improving Golang microservices and GraphQL APIs while collaborating with multiple technical disciplines to get working solutions through development, testing, deployment, and support.
Performance Objectives
1. Rapidly Contribute Production-Quality Golang Microservices. Within the initial 30–90 days, develop a working understanding of the existing POS and store-operations environment, relevant microservices, development practices, GraphQL interfaces, and cross-team delivery process and begin contributing independently to assigned engineering work. Design, develop, modify, and troubleshoot Golang microservices according to established application and platform requirements while producing maintainable code that can be effectively tested and supported by the broader engineering organization.
2. Build and Optimize GraphQL APIs for Enterprise and Store Applications. Work with consuming application teams to diagnose API-related problems and distinguish between issues originating in the GraphQL layer, Golang services, dependent systems, or client applications. Success will be measured by delivery of functional GraphQL capabilities, successful integration with consuming applications, timely resolution of API defects, and reliable behavior through testing and production readiness.
3. Strengthen Reliability and Supportability of POS and Store-Operations Services. During the initial three-month engagement and continuing through a potential conversion, proactively troubleshoot defects and technical problems affecting assigned Golang microservices and GraphQL APIs. Investigate problems to root cause, implement durable corrections, and work with QA, DevOps, and Platform Engineering when issues cross application, deployment, or infrastructure boundaries. Improve existing services where appropriate to make them easier to understand, test, deploy, troubleshoot, and maintain.
4. Deliver Effectively Across the Cross-Functional Engineering Lifecycle. Throughout the engagement, collaborate with Product to understand requirements, QA to validate functionality, and DevOps and Platform Engineering to support reliable deployment and operation of developed services. Surface unclear requirements, technical dependencies, delivery risks, and integration problems early enough for teams to address them before they become late-stage blockers.
Critical Subtasks
1. Learn the POS Architecture and Development Environment. During the first 30 days, develop a working understanding of the custom POS products, store-operations processes, Golang services, GraphQL APIs, development environment, and applicable engineering standards. Review existing code and representative services to understand established patterns, dependencies, testing practices, and delivery expectations.
2. Design and Develop Golang Microservices. Beginning during the initial ramp-up period, personally design, develop, modify, and maintain Golang microservices supporting POS products and store operations. Translate assigned requirements into maintainable implementations that follow established engineering patterns and integrate correctly with dependent applications and services.
3. Develop and Optimize GraphQL APIs. Ensure API behavior aligns with consuming-application requirements and troubleshoot issues involving queries, responses, application interactions, or dependent services. Improve existing API implementations where appropriate when maintainability or application behavior can be strengthened without unnecessarily increasing complexity.
4. Test and Troubleshoot Application Functionality. Throughout development, perform appropriate developer-level validation of Golang services and GraphQL functionality before handing changes into broader QA. Work closely with QA to reproduce defects, determine root causes, implement corrections, and confirm fixes through retesting.
5. Support Deployment and Production Readiness. Provide sufficient technical information for teams to diagnose problems and take ownership of application-level corrections required for successful deployment. Validate application behavior after significant deployment activities as appropriate and address unexpected problems promptly.
6. Improve Existing Services and Engineering Practices. Throughout the engagement, identify opportunities to improve the maintainability, reliability, troubleshooting, or development efficiency of existing Golang microservices and GraphQL APIs. Address technical issues discovered while working on assigned functionality rather than allowing recurring problems to remain undocumented or unresolved. Share useful implementation knowledge with other team members and contribute constructively to development and code-review practices.
7. Continuously Evaluate and Integrate AI to Improve Performance. Within the first 90 days and continuing through a potential conversion, evaluate how approved AI and automation capabilities can safely improve Golang development, GraphQL implementation, code analysis, testing, debugging, documentation, and engineering productivity. Use appropriate tools to accelerate routine development activities while independently reviewing generated code, tests, technical conclusions, and recommendations before they enter the codebase or influence production decisions.
Requirements
The core requirement is strong hands-on Golang development capability. The successful candidate must be capable of personally designing, developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting Golang-based microservices rather than simply having worked on a team where Golang was present.
Strong GraphQL development experience is also important. The individual should be capable of building and optimizing GraphQL APIs and troubleshooting interactions between APIs, backend services, and consuming enterprise or store applications.
The candidate should demonstrate experience working in a microservices environment and be comfortable investigating technical problems that cross service boundaries.
The role also requires effective collaboration with Product, QA, DevOps, and Platform Engineering teams. Technical capability must therefore be combined with clear communication, ownership, and the ability to work effectively across the software-delivery lifecycle.
Ideal Profile
The strongest candidate is a hands-on Golang engineer who can enter an existing microservices environment, understand the architecture quickly, and begin contributing meaningful production code with limited ramp-up time.
Definition of Success
The individual is successfully building and maintaining Golang microservices, developing and optimizing GraphQL APIs, resolving defects, and collaborating effectively with Product, QA, DevOps, and Platform Engineering.
Most importantly, the developer has demonstrated through actual delivery that they can take a requirement from this POS or store application needs this capability to a tested, reliable Golang service and GraphQL API ready for production, establishing a strong performance basis for potential conversion to a longer-term role.
