Surgical Medical Assistant
At Skin and Aesthetics Center, our Surgical Medical Assistants play a key role in delivering high-quality dermatologic surgical care to our patients at our Evergreen Park and Orland Park practice locations. As part of a comprehensive healthcare management services organization, this position combines hands-on procedural support with patient-centered service, ensuring a safe, efficient, and elevated experience in a fast-paced surgical dermatology setting.
The ideal candidate is steady, precise, and comfortable in the procedure room. You'll work closely with our providers to assist during biopsies, excisions, Mohs surgery, and repairs, manage the surgical room from setup to turnover, and help patients feel informed and at ease before, during, and after their procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a Medical Assistant training program
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or equivalent credential (CCMA, RMA)
- Current BLS certification
- Minimum of one year of medical assistant experience assisting with in-office procedures
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in dermatology, Mohs surgery, plastic surgery, ENT, or another surgical specialty strongly preferred
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems; EMA/ModMed experience a plus
- Working knowledge of surgical instruments, sterile technique, and instrument sterilization
- Bilingual (preferred) - ability to communicate with a diverse patient population
- Strong interest in dermatologic surgery and patient education
Responsibilities:
- Prepare procedure rooms for each case, including sterile tray setup, instrument selection, suture and supply staging, and patient positioning
- Room surgical patients, take vital signs, confirm procedure and site, review medications and allergies, and obtain signed consent
- Assist providers during biopsies, excisions, Mohs surgery, and repairs, anticipating instrument and supply needs and maintaining the sterile field
- Handle, label, log, and process specimens for pathology following sterilization and safety protocols, and track pending results
- Scribe procedure notes and post-operative instructions in the EHR system
- Provide wound care education, follow-up instructions, and warning signs to patients before discharge
- Perform suture removal, dressing changes, and wound checks at follow-up visits
- Sterilize instruments, operate and log the autoclave, and maintain procedure rooms, equipment, and supply inventory
- Follow infection control, OSHA, and HIPAA standards at all times
- Support general dermatology clinic flow and front desk operations as needed
- Travel between assigned practice locations as needed to provide surgical coverage
- Deliver a concierge-level patient experience from start to finish
Other duties as assigned to support clinical operations and consistent with the responsibilities of the role.

Key Skills:
- Proficient in surgical assisting, including sterile technique, tray setup, and instrument handling

- Comfortable with blood, needles, cautery, and extended procedures
- Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills
