At Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems in Owego, NY, we develop mission‑critical embedded software and advanced technologies for complex defense and aerospace systems. Our software supports safety‑critical avionics, mission computers, embedded processing, and secure systems where reliability and performance matter.
The Work
As a Level 3 Senior Software Engineer, you'll work across the software development lifecycle, taking ownership of complex technical assignments and developing solutions that move from design into real mission systems. You’ll turn requirements into solutions, solve problems, and collaborate across engineering disciplines to deliver mission‑critical capabilities.
You’ll have the opportunity to:
* Design, develop, integrate, test, debug, and maintain embedded software for avionics and mission computers – from device drivers and boot loaders to built‑in‑test (BIT) libraries.
* Analyze requirements and develop software designs that run on Real‑Time Operating Systems and hypervisors such as LynxOS, Windriver VxWorks, or Green Hills Integrity.
* Perform hands‑on software/hardware integration, verification, troubleshooting, and system‑level debugging using target hardware and laboratory instrumentation.
* Analyze and resolve complex issues involving processors, FPGAs, peripherals, and hardware/software interfaces.
* Apply software‑engineering standards, development processes, configuration management, and coding best practices.
* Support modern DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD and automated testing.
* Participate in peer reviews and technical design discussions.
* Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.

Basic Qualifications
* 5+ years related experience with an Associates Degree in STEM related field.
* Experience developing C code for embedded environments.
* Familiar with developing and debugging software that controls embedded hardware, firmware, and FPGAs. Knowledge of hardware communication protocols such as PCIe, SPI, UART, and I2C.
* Experience developing, integrating, and debugging software within a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) or embedded Linux environment (e.g., Wind River VxWorks, LynxOS, Green Hills Integrity, or similar).
* Must be a US Citizen; this position will require a DoD government security clearance at the Secret level. This position is located at a facility that requires special access.
Desired Skills
* Bachelors degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent STEM computing field with 5 years related professional experience or 3+ years related experience required with a related Masters degree
* Experience working with hardware/software interfaces (microcontrollers, microprocessors, FPGAs, or custom hardware).
* Experience writing device drivers and boot loaders, targeting Intel and PowerPC processors
* Ability to move from a component data sheet to a fully functional driver or control algorithm while maintaining traceability and process compliance
* Familiarity with open architecture initiatives and modular design standards (e.g., FACE, OMS, SOSA)
* Experience creating and configuring embedded Linux images
* Familiarity with safety-critical software development processes (e.g., DO-178C).
* Hands-on experience working in lab environments with test instrumentation (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, serial consoles).
* Experience developing test plans and procedures for software verification
* Experience with Git/GitLab, SonarQube, or Atlassian products
Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $98100.00 - $182100.00

* Annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs may be offered depending on the position. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and can vary from year to year and are tied to a range of performance metrics.
* For (Washington state applicants only) Non-represented full-time employees: accrue at least 10 hours per month of Paid Time Off (PTO) to be used for incidental absences and other reasons; receive at least 90 hours for holidays. Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.
