Job Summary

The Electrical Project Engineer at Weeks Island provides electrical engineering and project support for underground mining operations. This position is responsible for the design, installation, commissioning, reliability, and improvement of mine electrical systems and infrastructure.

The role manages electrical capital and expense projects from concept through completion and works closely with Operations and Maintenance to troubleshoot electrical issues, improve equipment reliability, and safely integrate new or modified equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Develop and execute electrical capital and expense projects from design through installation, commissioning, and closeout.

- Provide engineering support for underground and surface mine electrical distribution systems and infrastructure.

- Support electrical systems including switchgear, transformers, motor control centers (MCCs), motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and related mining equipment.

- Develop and review electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, equipment specifications, and technical documentation.

- Support electrical power studies, including short-circuit, protective-device coordination, load-flow, and arc-flash analysis.

- Support PLCs, instrumentation, controls, and automation systems used in mining operations.

- Partner with Operations and Maintenance to troubleshoot electrical failures, perform root-cause analysis, and improve equipment reliability.

- Provide engineering support for underground equipment installation, testing, startup, and commissioning.

- Identify opportunities to improve electrical safety, reliability, energy efficiency, and mine productivity.

- Prepare project scopes, cost estimates, schedules, and capital funding requests.

- Coordinate contractors, vendors, and internal resources performing electrical project work.

- Ensure electrical projects and installations meet applicable safety, regulatory, and engineering requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, and/or equivalent relevant experience.

- Minimum three (3) years of electrical engineering experience in mining, heavy industrial, manufacturing, or a similar environment.

- Knowledge of industrial electrical power distribution and electrical equipment.

- Experience with switchgear, transformers, MCCs, motors, VFDs, and electrical protection systems.

- Experience with electrical design, equipment specification, installation, testing, and commissioning.

- Ability to read and develop electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, and technical drawings.

- Experience troubleshooting electrical systems and equipment.

- Knowledge of PLCs, instrumentation, and industrial controls.

- Strong project management, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

- Ability to manage multiple projects and work independently.

- Ability to work in underground and surface mining environments.

- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Preferred

- Electrical engineering experience in an underground mining environment.

- Experience with medium-voltage mine power distribution systems.

- Experience with underground mining equipment and electrical infrastructure.

- Experience with short-circuit, coordination, load-flow, and arc-flash studies.

- Experience with PLCs, VFDs, automation, and industrial control systems.

- Experience with electrical power-system analysis software and AutoCAD.

- Experience managing mining capital projects and electrical contractors.

- Professional Engineer (PE) designation or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.

- Experience in salt, hard-rock, or other underground mining operations.

Work Environment

Field work will include underground and surface industrial environment where potential dust, high temperatures, and other industrial and mine related hazards may be encountered. High work will be needed for measurement and monitoring activities.
