Position Overview

The Lab Engineer is responsible for setting up, conducting, analyzing, and reporting mechanical and thermal testing on heat exchangers and thermal management products.

This position supports the Test Lab in product verification, validation, and durability testing, including performance, pressure cycle, burst, leak, and other related testing. The Lab Engineer will work closely with engineering and management to interpret testing requirements, operate and maintain laboratory equipment, troubleshoot test setups, analyze test results, and prepare technical reports.

This is a hands-on engineering position requiring regular involvement with laboratory equipment, test fixtures, instrumentation, mechanical systems, and fluid systems.

Key Responsibilities

- Set up, conduct, monitor, and document mechanical and thermal testing on heat exchangers and related thermal management products.
- Perform product verification and durability testing, including performance, pressure cycle, burst, leak, and other applicable testing.
- Review and follow customer specifications, engineering requirements, drawings, and test procedures.
- Independently operate laboratory equipment and instrumentation and monitor testing to ensure accurate and reliable results.
- Collect, organize, and analyze test data and identify abnormal results or performance trends.
- Prepare and complete technical test reports upon completion of testing.
- Build, modify, and troubleshoot test setups, fixtures, and laboratory equipment.
- Install, modify, and maintain air and fluid plumbing systems for laboratory equipment and test setups.
- Install, modify, and troubleshoot electrical and control wiring for laboratory equipment.
- Perform basic mechanical maintenance and troubleshooting on laboratory equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Support root cause analysis and troubleshooting of product or testing issues.
- Maintain laboratory documentation, test records, equipment records, and calibration documentation.
- Work closely with engineering teams to communicate test results and support product development and validation activities.
- Support continuous improvement of laboratory processes, testing methods, equipment, safety, and efficiency.
- Follow applicable company safety, quality, and laboratory procedures.

Requirements

Education

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or a related engineering/technical field preferred.
- Associate degree in a relevant technical field with strong applicable laboratory/testing experience may be considered.

Professional Experience

- 2+ years of laboratory testing, product validation, engineering, or related hands-on technical experience preferred.
- Experience with mechanical, thermal, pressure, performance, or durability testing is preferred.
- Automotive, commercial vehicle, heat exchanger, thermal management, or manufacturing experience is a plus.

Skills

- Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to independently set up and run laboratory tests according to specifications and procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, test procedures, and customer specifications.
- Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and fluid systems.
- Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, sensors, measurement equipment, and data acquisition systems.
- Ability to collect, analyze, and accurately document test data.
- Ability to prepare clear and complete technical test reports.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a hands-on laboratory environment.

Physical Demands

- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach throughout the workday.
- Ability to work hands-on with laboratory equipment, fixtures, hoses, piping, and test components.
- Ability to use hand and power tools as required.
- Ability to lift and move materials or components weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to safely work around pressurized systems, hot fluids, and mechanical equipment.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed in a laboratory and manufacturing environment. The employee may be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, pressurized systems, hot fluids, electrical equipment, and moderate to high noise levels. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.
