The Distributed Intelligence Data Science team is looking for a 2027 summer intern. Distributed Intelligence at Itron helps utilities achieve a new level of distribution system visibility by combining granular data from the grid’s edge with an open-enterprise application platform. Your work will help Itron push the boundaries on grid optimization, asset management, DER integration and customer engagement.
Duration:
40 hours per week, for 10 weeks during summer 2026. The target start is May/June, and the internship concludes August/September, depending on student academic schedule.
Potential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Engineering: Maintain and build data and/or production ML pipelines
- Engineering: Support the development and maintenance of cloud infrastructure
- Data Preparation: Clean and prepare moderate- to large-sized datasets (10s to 100s of GB) for analysis, algorithm development, and production purposes
- Data Analysis: Work with senior team members and subject matter experts on exploratory data analysis (EDA) and clearly communicate the findings to relevant stakeholders
- Algorithm Research: Support the development and refinement of new Machine Learning models under the guidance of senior team members
- Collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, product line managers and stakeholder
Required Skills & Experience:
- Education: Enrolled in a related accredited bachelor's degree program (preference: statistics, data science, applied mathematics, software engineering etc.) with completion of at least two years of college courses
- Experience with AI agent-driven code development, testing, and review
- Intermediate experience with SQL and Python
- Experience with statistical methods and data analysis
- Exposure to machine learning via classes, independent projects, or work experience
- Professional workplace communication skills
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Related internship or work experience
- Experience with AI agent-supported interactive data analysis
- Experience working with AWS or Azure
- Experience with versioning software like GitHub
- Enrolled in a related master’s degree program (preference: STEM degree, statistics, data science, software engineering etc.)
Physical Demands:
- This is a typical office job, with no special physical requirements or unusual work environment.
- This position will be tied to our Liberty Lake, WA location
Liberty Lake, WA: $15.87 - $44.23 per hour
