About the role
The Managing Director, Investment & Fund Operations is a pivotal senior role within ATB Investment Management responsible for driving and supporting operational excellence across our Investment Fund Management and Investment Counselling business that supports ATBIM’s next phase of growth. This leader ensures the business operates with optimal efficiency, scalability and aligns with the organization's strategic priorities.
You will serve as the leader for our middle office and operational infrastructure, while overseeing the transition to new portfolio management systems, managing a network of sub-advisors and custodians, and collaborating with our distribution network on their operational needs (including that of our principal distributor).
You will own the "Front-to-Back" flow of processes, data and assets, ensuring that whether assets are invested in a Compass Portfolio or a client is invested in a bespoke Private Counsel mandate, the process and experience is seamless, accurate, and scalable.
Accountabilities
Investment Operations & Middle Office
- Operational oversight: Ensure timely and accurate trade confirmation, settlement, and reconciliation across global markets. Oversee cash management and derivatives lifecycle processes to support portfolio managers and traders. Manage daily operations supporting a diverse range of asset classes and investment vehicles, including potentially complex and emerging products / strategies. Manage the operational integration of all internal managers and external sub-advisors.
- Books & Records, Performance and Reporting: Maintain a robust internal record of all holdings to provide an independent check against the custodian (State Street and our affiliate ATB Securities Inc.). Oversee performance measurement and analytics as well as institutional grade reporting, compliant with all regulatory requirements for all lines of business and channels supported.
- Trading and Trade Operations: Collaborate with the portfolio management team, oversee the activities of the Trading team, for both PIC and the IFM/PM groups, including trade lifecycle management, execution, control and special handling. The MD is responsible for operational risk oversight and governance, and for managing the critical interfaces between the trading team and the supporting systems, as well as back office, middle office, and finance functions.
- Private Investment Counsel (PIC) Support: Partner with Investment Counsellors and their supporting team members to ensure both core and "High-Touch" operational needs—such as bespoke rebalancing, tax-loss harvesting, and customized reporting—are efficient, accurate, compliant, and as automated as systems allow for.
Fund Operations
Fund Administration: Own all elements of day to day fund operations for current and future products, structures and asset classes. Oversee the daily NAV (Net Asset Value), distributions, cash forecasting alongside external fund administrators and transfer agents.
Product Development & Management: Lead operational requirements for future product development and launch of Mutual Funds, ETFs, and Alternative Investment Vehicles (Public & Private) with optimal efficiency. Design, execute and continuously improve workflows for new and existing vehicles and deliver solutions on critical timelines to hit business objectives.
Vendor & Custody Management: Manage relationships, contracts and operational due diligence requirements for service providers and sub-advisors.
Systems & Platforms
- System Optimization: Collaborate with technology, finance, risk and compliance partners, to design and implement system enhancements and optimize processes that support scalable growth and efficiencies.
- Data Management: Own the operational environment and its data requirements and governance. Ensure data integrity, accuracy and consistency across all platforms.
- Project Management: Lead projects from inception to completion aligning with strategic objectives, resourcing and timelines.
Governance & Risk
- Regulatory & Compliance: Ensure compliance controls aligned with Canadian regulatory frameworks (NI 31-103, NI 81-102), supporting NI 45-106 exempt market distributions or prospectus-qualified funds.
- Continuously monitor regulatory developments and assess their impact on investment products, operational workflows, and risk exposure, while proactively executing required changes.

People Leadership
- This individual will be responsible for building, coaching, mentoring the operations team, while simultaneously driving the multi-year implementation and change towards an operating model of the future.
- The successful candidate must show a proven ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships while at the same time acting as a positive force in change management within the team, ATBIM and Wealth overall.
- Communicate operational strategy and priorities clearly across teams and senior stakeholders.

Skills, experience & requirements
- Experience: 10–15 years of progressive operations experience in asset management and private wealth, ideally with time spent in a sophisticated asset management environment.
- Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of the trade lifecycle across public and private markets, (including equity, fixed income, funds of funds, derivatives, macro products & alternatives), public and private fund structuring and operations,
- Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of Canadian regulatory requirements and implications (eg. NI 81-102, CIRO, NI 31-103, etc) and ideally with background knowledge on global regulators, rules and trends (SEC, FCA, ESMA).
- Systems Proficiency: Proven experience with advanced wealth and portfolio management platforms, implementation, data and processes.
- Education: Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline required. Advanced degree (MBA) and/or relevant professional designation (CFA/CPA/CIM) are preferred.
Salary Range
$170,000 - $185,0000
