About the Role Confluent’s Business Systems team is looking for a Business Systems Engineer III to help build and operate the systems that power a modern, consumption-based SaaS business. In this role, you will be a hands-on technical owner for executing improvements and enhancements in the Metronome platform.  You will configure, design, develop, test, deploy, and debug business systems solutions that support usage, pricing, billing, entitlements, invoicing, and related financial processes. You will work closely with experienced engineers, business systems partners, Finance, Revenue Operations, Engineering, Data, and other stakeholders to turn well-defined business needs into reliable production outcomes. This is an execution-focused role for an engineer who takes pride in quality, learns complex systems quickly, and delivers with speed. You will work within established architecture and delivery patterns while building the judgment to identify risks, clarify requirements, and recommend better approaches. Your work will directly improve the reliability, scalability, and usability of systems that are critical to Confluent’s business. What You Will Do ● Own the delivery of moderate-complexity Metronome enhancements from technical discovery and implementation through testing, deployment, and post-release validation.  ● Configure and extend Metronome to support usage, pricing, rating, billing, entitlement, invoicing, and downstream financial workflows. ● Translate business requirements and solution designs into clear technical tasks, configurations, code changes, test cases, and release plans. ● Develop platform customizations, scripts, APIs, integrations, and automation using established patterns and sound engineering practices.  ● Design and implement changes that are readable, testable, secure, maintainable, and resilient to expected edge cases and errors.  ● Build and execute unit, integration, regression, and user acceptance testing for system changes; investigate failures and drive issues to resolution. ● Deploy changes using established version-control, release-management, change-management, and production-readiness practices. ● Debug issues across configurations, code, integrations, data, and dependent systems; use a systematic approach to isolate root causes and implement durable fixes.  ● Trace data flows and dependencies across Metronome and connected systems, identifying downstream impacts before changes are released. ● Maintain clear technical documentation, deployment notes, test evidence, troubleshooting guidance, and operational runbooks.  ● Participate in design reviews, code reviews, backlog refinement, planning, and other delivery ceremonies; provide constructive input and ask effective questions.  ● Communicate progress, risks, blockers, and tradeoffs clearly, escalating decisions that require broader architectural or business judgment.  ● Partner with business stakeholders and technical teams to clarify requirements, validate outcomes, and deliver solutions that improve operational efficiency.  ● Contribute to shared engineering practices, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement across the Business Systems team. ● 5+ years of experience in business systems engineering, software engineering, systems development, application administration, or a related field; equivalent practical experience is welcome. ● Hands-on experience configuring, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting complex SaaS business-system solutions.  ● Experience with Metronome or another usage-based billing, consumption management, metering, subscription billing, or revenue operations platform is strongly preferred.  ● Working knowledge of API-first integration patterns, Python REST APIs, webhooks, JSON, data models, SQL, scripting, and asynchronous system behavior. ● Ability to navigate a complex system, understand how components fit together, and trace a change across configurations, integrations, data, and dependent services. ● Strong engineering discipline, including writing maintainable code or configuration, accounting for edge cases, handling errors, protecting sensitive data, and creating effective tests.  ● Experience with modern software delivery practices such as Git-based development, code review, automated testing, CI/CD, release management, and production support.  ● A systematic approach to debugging and problem solving, with the ability to resolve issues within your area of ownership and recognize when escalation is needed.  ● Ability to manage your own work, break larger tasks into workable milestones, meet commitments, and move quickly without sacrificing quality. ● Strong attention to detail and follow-through, especially when changes affect financially significant data or business processes.  ● Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical work to business stakeholders and collaborate effectively with engineers and partners. ● A customer-focused, collaborative mindset and a desire to simplify processes, remove manual work, and improve the experience of the teams who rely on Business Systems. ● Experience implementing or operating Metronome in a high-growth SaaS environment.  ● Experience integrating usage and billing platforms with Salesforce, CPQ, NetSuite or another ERP, contract lifecycle management systems, data warehouses, or internal services. ● Familiarity with consumption-based pricing, product catalogs, usage data quality, entitlements, invoicing, credits, collections, or revenue operations.  ● Experience supporting high-volume usage data, event-driven integrations, or financially significant business processes. ● Familiarity with cloud platforms, infrastructure-as-code, observability tooling, and secure service-to-service integrations.  ● Experience working in an environment with access controls, audit trails, change management, data governance, or SOX-related controls. ● Experience improving deployment automation, test coverage, documentation, monitoring, or developer productivity.  ● Thoughtful use of AI-assisted development and automation, paired with sound judgment, human review, testing, and appropriate controls.
