Clinical and Patient Care Responsibilities
- Examine, diagnose, and manage patients presenting with gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and digestive system disorders.
- Conduct outpatient consultations and provide inpatient care for patients admitted under Medical Gastroenterology.
- Evaluate patients with conditions such as:
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Peptic ulcer disease
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis
- Hepatitis and other liver disorders
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Pancreatitis and pancreatic disorders
- Biliary tract disorders
- Gastrointestinal malignancies
- Formulate appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic plans based on clinical assessment and investigations.
- Provide consultation for complex and critically ill gastroenterology patients.
- Coordinate with other specialties for multidisciplinary patient management.
- Ensure appropriate admission, treatment, referral, and discharge planning.
- Counsel patients and attendants regarding diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis, and preventive measures.
B. Endoscopic and Specialized Procedures
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
- Perform colonoscopy and other lower gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures.
- Perform endoscopic interventions within approved privileges and demonstrated competency.
- Undertake procedures such as endoscopic variceal ligation, polypectomy, endoscopic haemostasis, and foreign body removal, as clinically indicated and within approved privileges.
- Perform ERCP, EUS, and other advanced procedures only when appropriately trained, credentialed, and privileged.
- Ensure informed consent before invasive procedures.
- Ensure appropriate pre-procedure assessment, sedation safety, and post-procedure monitoring.
- Maintain accurate endoscopy reports and procedure-related documentation.
- Ensure compliance with endoscope reprocessing, infection control, and patient safety protocols.
